SFC is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its founding this year. For this class, we have invited a handful of SFC alumni from around Japan and the world, who have especially embodied the SFC spirit in their roles as societal leaders. These select alumni have asked themselves throughout their everyday lives, what the “spirit” of this era is, and they have been continuously updating their way of thinking and doing and their selves based on this question. As they speak to you about their thoughts and experiences, we hope to give you the resources and inspiration to design the core of your own “SFC Spirit”.
As this is a course that would benefit all SFC students, we welcome students of all grade levels. We especially encourage first year students new to SFC to take this class alongside “Policy Management Studies” and “Environment and Information Studies”.

This course provides an introduction to learn how to prevent or mitigate natural disasters, especially those related to a large earthquake.
You will briefly learn the mechanism of hazards (earthquakes and tsunamis), and the disasters caused by those natural phenomena.
You will also see the limitations of disaster sciences or hardware preparedness such as sea walls, and so the importance of education and communication.
The goal of this course is to summarise what you learned and find a research topic to work on with your group members.
By the end of this course, you will properly present what to do for disaster prevention based on your research. You will also be able to give an advice to your friends on how to live and behave in earthquake prone country.
