    The acquisition of communication based foreign language skills, which students can competently practice in their daily life, is the top priority goal of German education at SFC. In this course new topics and grammar will be introduced every week. The learning materials are developed to match the student’s school life, area of study and personal interests while studying at SFC. The steps of the grammar lessons as well as the important subjects are all based on the curriculum at SFC. The students will learn around 10 key sentences as well as 40 to 50 words per week. In one semester they will be freely able to communicate with 100 to 150 key sentences and 700 words. Students who will complete the intensive courses 1 and 2 will be able to acquire all basic German grammar, which will be equivalent to the A2 level of CEFR.

    In this course “The Constitution of Urban Space”, the students will firstly enhance their understanding on how the constructions of buildings that constitute urban space are controlled by laws and regulations.
     In Building Standards Act, the central topic of this course, there are “general regulations” such as building certification and building examinations, and “regulations for individual buildings” to mainly secure safety of each buildings, and “regulations for collective buildings” to secure the city environment. This course will also discuss other laws and regulations such as Barrier-Free Law, and Energy Saving Act in relation to “regulations for individual buildings”, and City Planning Law in relation to “regulations for collective buildings”.
    Each of these laws and regulations are determined to solve social problems from the field of architecture and urban planning aiming at protection of life, health, and properties of citizens, sound development of national economy, stabilized improvement of the domestic quality of life, and enhancement of public welfare. In this course, students are to refer to letter of the law, and understand the relationship between laws and problems the laws attempt to solve. The students are to deepen their understanding of laws and regulations through discussion on the limitation of current regulation, response to new social problems and other unsolved problems of the current regulation.
    In the latter half of the course, excursion will be held to confirm how laws and regulations form “buildings” and “city” in reality. As a practice, each student is to present proposal on solution to a chosen unsolved problem, and the topic will be discussed as a class.
    Throughout the course, the class will look in a chapter on building regulation from Examination of the First Class Authorized Architect, and tutorials will be held to support those wish to obtain qualification as a registered architect.
