Choosing a methodology that aligns with one’s research question and objectives is essential for successful research. While research methods can vary across disciplines, this course focuses primarily on those developed by social scientists (e.g., sociologists, and political scientists). The course will cover various methods, such as experiments (in the context of social scientific research), ethnography, interviews, surveys, document analysis, and secondary data analysis, which includes re-using official statistics and survey micro-records collected by others.

Throughout the semester, we may also cover the practical aspects of research as needed. This encompasses the initial stages of research, techniques for finding relevant literature, proper citation of sources, and research ethics.

＊Please be aware that attendance is mandatory. Exceeding a certain number of absences, including for varsity sports, job hunting, failure to submit assignments, or poor participation in group work, could lead to automatic failure.

Geography is a study that researche on natural environment and human activities in the space on the earth, which consists of systematic geography and regional geography. In this lecture, we will learn about the latter, explaining current state and problems of “Global Cities” and industrial agglomerations in the global economy. We emphasize learning how to see things geographically, rather than simply memorizing knowledge.

(This course will be a GIGA-English course for AY2022, and in AY2023 will be offered in Japanese.) This lecture will combine the teaching of Aynu language to gain basic communicative competence, which enables us to delve into the rich world of Aynu culture manifested in its oral literature, with reflection on socio-political issues surrounding Aynu peoples and Aynu language revitalization in contemporary Japanese society.

Kelas Skill adalah kelas untuk mahasiswa yang sudah menyelesaikan kelas Intensif 2. Kelas ini juga bagi mahasiswa yang ingin mengasah Bahasa Indonesianya untuk menjadi semakin lancar dan juga mahasiswa yang ingin belajar kosa kata khusus serta kondisi sosial untuk mempersiapkan diri bekerja di perusahaan atau institusi Jepang-Indonesia. Selain itu, juga bisa meningkatkan kemahiran membaca dan mengutarakan pendapat dalam Bahasa Indonesia. Kelas ini dapat diambil berulang kali bagi mahasiswa yang telah memenuhi syarat.

The aim of the seminar is to deepen the understanding of Islam in Japanese society and to implement projects aimed at coexistence with Muslims living in Japan and those visiting Japan as tourists.
Currently, the number of Muslims in the world is about 1.6 billion, and one out of every four people in the world is a Muslim, and the population is increasing. The number of Muslims living in Japan to study or to work and the number of Muslims visiting Japan for sightseeing are also increasing year by year. On the other hand, the image of Islam in Japan is not always good, and Japanese people do not fully understand Islam. In this seminar, students will deepen the understanding of the teachings of Islam and the religious practices of Muslims through literature reading, while conducting fieldwork and joint projects to build a network with Muslims living in Japan, connect Japanese society and Muslims, and consider new forms of coexistence in Japan.

This seminar is for the students who are interested in contemporary issues in Southeast Asia, including society, culture, history, politics, economy, the relationship with Japan, etc. The students study these issues through reading important literature in groups and by individuals.

Les questions de société sont vastes et peuvent être abordées à travers de nombreux médias. Dans ce cours, à travers l’étude de texte en français (des articles, des textes littéraires, des paroles de chanson, etc.), nous aborderons des questions de société variée.

Dans un premier temps, nous prendrons le temps de lire et comprendre les textes de façon plus ou moins détaillés en fonction des séances. Puis, nous mettrons en évidence les thèmes et problématiques relatives au texte. Pour enfin, finir par une discussion sur les thèmes et problématiques mis en évidence.

Our brain and body are always interacting each other by sending information named "neural signals", and being essentials for our movements and sensations. In this seminar, by considering the brain and body as a system, we are trying to learn the control and learning mechanisms of our bodily movements and to understand the secrets and essentials of humans from physiological and/or psychological points of view.

What would society be like in the future? This class sets off by imagining that society of the future will be a “Creative Society” where each and every person makes full use of their own creativity that they originally hold within themselves. In a creative society, it will become a commonplace for everyone to “create” in many different fields and domains.

In the past, “Information Society,” which began with the advent of the Internet, changed our lives, organizations, and society. In the same way, the arrival of Creative Society will bring enormous change in the way we live, organize and live in society.

Imagining what those changes are and what they will bring is an important in preparation for the future. Methodologies and tools regarding the creation of a future where we can live well are important. In this course, I will share an idea that I have devoted myself to for a decade, my relevant works and my experience with you.

The idea is to create and utilise ‘pattern languages’ for creative human actions in order to encourage people to improve their practices and dialogue in many domains. Pattern language is the media for identifying common patterns of good practices embedded in specific domains and sharing the wisdom with others. It was originally proposed in the architecture domain in the 1970s and has since been applied to various domains such as software development, education and organisations.

For the past 15 years, my collaborators and I have created more than 80 pattern languages on diverse topics that provide tacit practical knowledge of creative human actions, comprising more than 2,000 patterns in total. Topics include the following: learning, collaboration, presentation, project design, open dialogue, education, reading, music composition, project design, startup, value-creation marketing, social intrapreneurs, change making, cooking, living well with working and parenting, living well with dementia, elderly care, management of child care, employment of people with disabilities, welfare innovation, hospitality, life transition, beauty in everyday life, natural living, digital transformation, disaster prevention and public policy design.

These pattern languages have been practically utilised to improve practices and generate dialogues among people in various organisations and communities. I also have developed a methodology and philosphy for creating a pattern language that contains aspects of both of science and art. You will learn the case of a new type of academic study, which I call "Studies on Creative Practice".

In this lesson, we learn "sports analytics" from a multifaceted perspective.

This seminar will provide the academic training to write individual research paper by using microdata and the methods of applied econometrics. Research topic will be chosen by each student.

Physical and Mental Health for Campus Life is a prerequisite for second year advancement. Freshmen are strongly recommended to enroll during their first semester. Through lecture and group work, this course aims to provide fundamental knowledge for a healthy and productive campus life and further prepare the student to be a self-managing and self-sufficient leader of society after graduation. Among the topics to be discussed are lifestyle, basic life support, infection prevention, managing alcohol and drinking habits. For GIGA program students and international students, a special emphasis is placed on Intercultural adjustment issues.

The purpose of this class is to understand Indonesian society with examining various events and topics which affect the social changes. Since the collapse of the Suharto authoritarian regime in 1998, Indonesia has experienced remarkable economic growth as well as democratization. At the same time, in the society where democracy has begun to take root, Islam has become more visible and has been exerting its power in various aspects of society. In this class, students will learn the reality of Indonesia with these characteristics and the changes in society by examining individual topics. Although we will be dealing directly with Indonesian society, we will also consider the cases from other regions, such as emerging countries in Asia that have similar characteristics or are experiencing similar changes, and the Islamic world in the Middle East, where turmoil continues.

Climate change is a cross-disciplinary issue that is quite multifaceted and interacts strongly with other aspects of society, especially energy, which underpins modern society. There is no unique solution to this problem. In other words, it is a difficult problem to solve, but also a very interesting one.

In this course, we will focus on the essence of the climate change issue, mainly in terms of climate mitigation, and try to deepen our understanding through lectures and exercises.

The entry into force of the Paris Agreement, the adoption of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the rapid spread of ESG (environmental, social and corporate governance) investment are at a new stage of environmental business. Consider the role that business plays in transitioning to a sustainable, low-carbon society, in light of changes in environmental business and its trends in the world. In addition, you will learn the methods necessary to build an environmental business on the basis of extensive case studies, and actually experience the presentation of business ideas.

In this project, we apply the most advanced metabolomics technology based on capillary electrophoresis mass spectrometry(CE-MS) for biomedical, food and environmental fields to understand biological metabolism and develop industrial application.

The purpose of this class is to consider several themes of past buildings and cities by introducing cases of various ages and cultures. The key issues of the whole class are the locality found in the historical buildings and cities, their transformation process, and the way to understand and interpret them. The examples of different ages and cultures often question our everyday lives. Therefore, this class aims to broaden one's perspectives on buildings and cities by introducing unfamiliar examples.
