This course focuses on corporate legal issues. Companies need to overcome a numerous kinds of complex and advanced problems in order to create value by cooperating with other companies, such as M&A activities. The objective of this course is to give students an introduction to Critical Legal Thinking and Practical Legal Methods to handle issues associated with co-creation activities by corporations. The topics will address from very fundamental and essential issues of Corporate Governance and Finance to the latest issues of M&A, Venture Investment, and Joint Venture. The style of the course is lecture and class activity. It is expected to analyze issues deeply in the class although class activities will complete in the class. In the co-creation activities like M&A, companies solve problems by putting variety of knowledge of professions in different fields such as management, finance, tax and legal. In this course, too, employing interdisciplinary approaches will enable students to obtain deep insights and provide solutions for the issues.
Using microeconomics and game theory mainly, the public choice explains political phenomena, analyzes interdependence between polity and economy, and clarifies the basis of legal system and social norm. Adopting the analytical methods of microeconomics and game theory here means that the public choice basically depends on the hypothesis that people and organizations behave to maximally achieve their specific objectives under given conditions.
In this lecture, in order to place emphasis on having students understand the basic idea of public choice, we will not carry out detailed technical explanation as a rule. However, because it is necessary to respond well to the intellectual requirements of graduate students, somewhat advanced contents may be included for undergraduates.
Theory and Analysis of Public Finance for Central Government
This course aims to understand the standard knowledge and theory of public finance, which is the study of revenue and expenditure of the country, and to consider the important fiscal issues surrounding our country today. Individually, we will examine what constitutes a fair tax system with respect to social security systems (e.g. medical care, public pension system and social welfare) and the tax system, which tends to be biased in its historical context.
Local government in Japan consists of 47 prefectures and 1,718 municipalities (City, Town and Village). Before HEISEI Merger, the number of municipalities was over 3,000. Difficulty of public finance forced reform of municipalities. Yubari city, Hokkaido is the only bankruptcy municipality in Japan now. In future, some municipality will face the same difficulty.
This class provides the understanding a general and a specific topics of the public finance of local government. Students investigate the accounting reports.
The first goal is to understand the fundamentals of microeconomics and macroeconomics that form the basis of economics with certainty. The economic thinking is unexpectedly simple (this can be said for both microeconomics and macroeconomics), students will acquire representative analytical techniques such as constrained maximization (minimization) and comparative statics.
Then, when viewing the real economy, it is the second goal to get a first understanding of what points to focus on and how to use theoretical tools. Also, I would like to mention the latest topics within the scope of time.
In this course, you will learn the basic concepts of administrative law through specific issues related to administration. It deals with important items in the interpretation law such as administrative discretion and legal administration, as well as matters related to public policy such as private consignment, administrative regulation, social welfare and city planning. In addition, as the latest topic, we plan to set the theme of traffic policy such as drones and self-driving cars and digitization of administration. By considering the mechanism of current law and disputes, we would like to examine the direction of legal policy that should be in the future.

Advanced-level readings and analysis of economic and social development issues in the Asian region. Objective: To research and discuss issues of livelihood, environmental resources, health, and migration within the ASEAN countries in the postwar and contemporary periods.
The focus is on the issues that have arisen from the impact of economic development on local communities and ordinary citizens.
Method: In addition to reading theoretical and critical works on development, there is weekly discussion based on the readings. We adopt a regional focus on Southeast and East Asian with successful and unsuccessful examples. There is also a practical and micro-level focus on the people and communities that are experiencing development themselves. After the mid-term, we explore various strategies for Sustainable Development and participatory development by looking at some current projects in Asia.
We look at 5 main issues in contemporary development in rural Asia: 1) Unsustainable and Sustainable livelihoods in rural areas 2) Efforts to fulfil Basic Human Needs and Human Security 3) Labor force: gender, migration (both domestic and cross-border), wages 4) Public Health issues and policies 5) Impacts of Climate Change on developing countries and populations。
For a basic grasp of the topics above, students will need to complete a fair amount of reading each week. After reading the assigned materials for each week and participating in the lectures on the reading material, students are expected to participate in questions and discussion. Students should also look at the materials and issues from a multi-faceted point of view. For this purpose they should also research on their own into other relevant primary sources, including books, websites, and current statistical data. Suggestions on these other materials are offered in class.
Arab countries and the Middle East are still unfamiliar to many Japanese and are often subject to prejudice and misunderstanding. In the first half of this lecture, students learn basic knowledge about the Middle East and Muslim world, with special focus on Arab countries. Then in the second half, looking back on about 10 years since the so-called 'Arab Spring' in which protests by citizens calling for the overthrow of the long-lasting dictatorship spread among Arab countries, we examine how the people in the Arab countries attempted to change their society, while appreciating the cultural and artistic works created in the process.

Various corporate crimes and corporate scandals, as typified by the Nissan Ghosn incident, have occurred one after another. Currently, interest in corporate governance is rapidly growing. This is a time when management is fundamentally being questioned. In this subject, we will learn the original concepts and theoretical background of corporate governance. After that, we will specifically discuss the issues of corporate governance in Japanese and Korean companies. We would like to deepen the students' awareness of problems related to corporate issues.
The aim of this course is to provide knowledge of experiments for life science. In the class, students study the basic skills for experiments of DNA and protein.
During the first half (1-7th time), you will learn how to insert a recombinant gene into a plasmid vector and analyze its gene expression in the bacteria Escherichia coli. The purpose of this lecture is to understand the actual situation and background of the growing environmental issues, to know the trends of domestic and foreign policies, and to acquire a basic perspective on how to realize a sustainable world. In classes, you will also learn the importance of understanding actual data and events and grasping things from a medium- to long-term perspective.
This is a course on foreign policy analysis, known as FPA. It focuses on policy-making, decision-making and implelemtation of foreign policy, mainly of Japan, but we will compare it with other countries. This course will also examine policy process within the European Union (EU) - particularly, European foreign policy (EFP) - and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).
