Health Research Exercises-The Basics of Epidemiology and Statistics
In this course, students will acquire the basic knowledge and attitude to handle data related to health care, the basic knowledge of statistics that is essential for reading medical and health science research papers, and the basic ability to perform statistical analysis by themselves. The classes will be the combination of lectures and exercises using statistical software. Students will learn the process of producing health data and what they should be careful about when they conduct research and collect data by themselves. After taking this course, students will be understand research design and analytical methods necessary for their graduation research.
The Industrious City - Urban Industry in the digital age
This study group will further research the theme of the book "The Industrious City - Urban Industry in the digital age" published in 2021.
“Cities have always been places where production and commerce, working and living are physically and functionally integrated. Only with the rise of modern industry have zoning regulations been introduced to separate these functions in space. However, what is the role of such regulations when industry is digitized increasingly emission-free, and based on innovation more than mass production? How should working and living be combined to make mobility and energy consumption become more sustainable? And what are the opportunities in creating urban areas based on social equity and resilience, in a volatile world characterized by digital disruption, migration and demographic shifts?” (The Industrious City, Edited by Hiromi Hosoya and Markus Schaefer, 2021, Lars Müller Publisher).
"The Industrious City" explored how new synergies can be found between production, services, leisure, and living, using the polycentric urban landscape of Switzerland as an example. In this study group, we will conduct similar research on the Japanese case, i.e., not in urban centers, but in rural towns and depopulated areas.

Interdisciplinary RNA research
RNA is known to be a molecule that intricately and precisely regulates higher-order biological phenomena. The purpose of the 2022 Summer Research Program is to further our understanding of life phenomena by investigating how RNA and related biomolecules are related to our own research topics through both biological and computational experiments. Specifically, they will create hydrogels using RNA, investigate the function of gene clusters in Halomonas sp. and analyze genes related to telomere, the terminal sequence of shark chromosomes. Some of the participants are unable to come to the Center due to the spread of the new coronavirus during the summer program period, so they will be able to participate remotely.
Japanese Digital Storytelling
Students will create a piece of Digital Storytelling in Japanese. Digital Storytelling is a 3 or 4 minutes video that tells a story about themselves. Using the Japanese language appropriate to each student's Japanese level, students will create a story with photos and videos. The aim is to improve their Japanese language skills through talking about themselves, writing scripts, and discussions. In the end, students will share their works, get to know each other, and share their thoughts.
Employment System and Labor Policy in Japan
Research on the possibility that and the reasons (if so) why firms has failed to act according to needs of students in recruiting (or students’ Job-hunting) process, and also on how firms should act, will be made in this special project.
An aspect of this special project is a preparation of “Presentation to HR staff of firms,” which is planned to be held in Fall Semester.
Human Performance
Mainly from the fields of sports psychology and ergonomics, we will examine basic human behavioral characteristics through eye movement measurements, behavioral analysis, and subjective evaluation methods in various environments. In the class, we will analyze the current situation, construct the experimental environment, plan the research conditions, conduct and analyze the experiment, and present and critique the research.
Application of advanced technologies such as robotics, web services, AR/VR, video production, etc.
During the program period, participants will learn practical research methods through the implementation of practical research projects that apply advanced technologies. The fields of study will be robotics, web, AR/VR, and video production, but students who wish to work in other fields may consult with us on an individual basis. At the beginning of the semester, students will set specific project goals and conduct individual or team research projects, presenting the theme, survey, interim presentation, final presentation, and term paper.
Crisis Management, Risk Communication, Natural Disaster, Disaster Prevention
This study will examine the crisis management of organizations in light of the increasing severity and frequency of natural disasters, and will focus on public facilities in a practical manner. For example, taking an airport used by an unspecified number of people as an example, it is the employees of an airline company who are in charge of crisis management at the time of a disaster. Since they are well versed in crisis management, including response to aircraft accidents, and are professionals in customer service, it can be predicted that many users will depend on the airline company. In reality, however, they do not necessarily have expertise in natural disasters, and above all, airline personnel are also victims of disasters.
Under these circumstances, possible risks (risks of natural disasters themselves, risks due to the presence of an unspecified number of people, risks due to differences from aircraft accidents, risks of psychological burden on employees, etc.) are identified, and possible solutions are obtained while incorporating the opinions of relevant experts. This is not the only "correct answer," but rather a "solution" that is possible only on a case-by-case basis. In this case, it is necessary to develop human resources who are capable of not only making decisions based on manuals, but also responding flexibly and flexibly.
In this class, students will learn from lectures by experts in multiple fields (aviation safety, natural disasters, and mental health care) and consider measures to solve problems. The final product will be a teaching material on disaster prevention in public facilities.
Assessment development
In this project, the students develop assessments that can evaluate and uncover the causes of academic difficulties in elementary school children. They will then develop the assessments for junior high school students as well.
In Search of Future of Organizations
We collaborate with Tsuyama City and work on a "Smart-City" project.
Workshop in Applied Micro-Econometrics
In this course, students are required to write a term paper. They
are required to choose a topic based on their own academic interest, analyze micro-data using applied microeconometric methods (especially causal inference), and make policy recommendations.
Arabic Language and Culture Immersion Program
This is a special class where you will spend three days immersed in Arabic with native Arabic speakers and TAs. The goal is not only to improve language skills, but also to deepen understanding of Arab culture through various workshops.
Social Marketing and Value Co-Creation
Although marketing has developed its theories, ideas, and methods mainly in corporate management, its theories, ideas, and methods are now being used in the social sphere and in the sphere of activities of public and non-profit organizations. For example, non-profit organizations, governments, hospitals, schools, and others are utilizing marketing ideas, know-how, and techniques developed through corporate management in order to more effectively and efficiently realize their missions and values. In addition, for-profit companies are evaluating their corporate activities from the perspective of "corporate social responsibility" and "value co-creation with society," and are building the foundations for sustainable activities. This marketing movement is collectively called "social marketing," and various practices and theories are being accumulated. In this research project, students who have learned the basic concepts, ideas, methods, and transition of social marketing will work on specific product development while conducting various surveys, research, and development activities with the support of government agencies, companies, and social welfare corporations with which they have cooperative relationships.
Molecular mechanisms controlling early development
In the Wet-Bio building located in the SFC, various experiments such as gene introduction, microscopic observation of organisms, and breeding of small aquatic organisms are possible. Participants will be those who are usually interested in the life phenomena of a particular organism. First, each person shares their research content as a whole, then discusses the questions and solutions, and then discusses what could be considered if a survey were conducted based on that premise. Each person will follow suit, make a detailed plan for conducting the experiment, and announce the progress.
Human Movement Neuroscience
The aim of this project is to deepen sensorimotor physiological studies. In the first half, we will review various types of articles and try to find core of these studies, interpret their methodologies, and sophisticate your own research ideas. In the second half, we will construct analyzing programs using Matlab software.
