Data-driven Research for the Development of Smart City and Region

This Kenkyukai is conducting research activities with the goal of building data-driven smart cities and regions. Data Driven means to make decisions and take actions based on data. In today's data-driven society, more quantitative and rational ways of thinking are required instead of the conventional qualitative decision-making. In light of this social trend, we are researching how to discover, solve, and implement problems using analytical methods that utilize data.
Concretely speaking, we use geographic information systems (GIS) to analyze and map geographic data to discover problems in cities and regions, such as the environment, disaster prevention, transportation, tourism, welfare, and agriculture, to understand the causes of problems and their relationship to the people living there, to propose solutions for an ultra-smart society, and to provide policy support. We also propose solutions for an ultra-smart society and provide policy support. We are a research group that can discover problems, devise solutions, and implement them, which is a characteristic of SFC.

Korean is one of the easiest language for Japanese speakers to learn(and vice versa). There are many reasons: (1) same word order, (2) grammatical similarity, (3) a number of kanji words shared in Japanese and Korean, (4) cultural similarity. It takes relatively short time from zero to fluency.

Multicellular organisms like us have very complex and elaborate morphologies. We can use it to do a variety of things, and interestingly, people can seriously consider the question of what they are. However, even such a complex organism is just a single sphere called an egg at the beginning of its life. The ultimate simple form automatically changes over time into the complex form described above. If you were to use clay to create an image of a "thinking person," many would first determine the proportion of clay to be allocated to the head, torso, and feet.
In fact, the design style (body plan) used by living organisms to create the body does exactly the same way. By repeating simple rules, complex things can be created. In this class, you will learn the body plan that creatures actually use.

The twenty-first century is still the century competing globally for energy. One of our main missions would be to recreate much more clean and efficient new energy systems to sustain the future society, which could also show us a possible scenario for leading modern energy revolution on the earth.
We are now witnessing the emergence of high-performance battery in our society, whose paradigm shift of electricity reservation could bridge and make information and energy united together to finally establish highly-integrated information-energy networks. We could not imagine yet how far this dizzy paradigm shift could bring us, meanwhile, it would certainly impact our society irreversibly to create utterly new artifacts far beyond our current imagination to form pieces of “the future battery society” to come.
We sincerely wish we could envisage this new concepts and a taste of the future through this unique series of lectures.

One of big problems of studying biology is caused by too various species found on the earth and too complicated structures of each creature, meaning that it is difficult to find what is important point in this academic field. I believe that comparison of real world and life science events can be good tip to solve this problem on studying biology. In this class, gathering various knowledge and experience of mine, 14 biological topics will be performed. I do not care whether you studied biology in high school or not.

Students will learn through reading in circles, group work, and basic experiments in order to improve their basic knowledge of metabolism, nutrition, and health. Eventually, we would like to expand our activities to social activities in collaboration with various other research group projects working on IT, policy, city planning, etc. Research is not all pleasure, but it also requires persistent mental strength. We welcome those who can find delight in actually working with their hands and creating new concepts, not just knowledge.

    Algorithmic Design

The Algorithmic Design Lab. (ADL), as its name suggests, is a research group that conducts research and practice on the architectural design process called "algorithmic design.

At ADL, we are exploring the computability of architecture by writing down every design process related to architecture into computer algorithms. By doing so thoroughly, we will reveal what only humans can do and what designers should do, in other words, the (in)computability of architecture.

For more specific information about the activities, please see the following two lecture videos.

Algorithmic Design --- Growing architecture like plants ---(00:12:16)

    Framework for Algorithmic Design(01:29:47)

If you are at all interested in ADL after watching these videos, please come to our lab.

Even if you are a beginner in architectural design or have no experience in programming, you are welcome. If you are interested but worried, please talk to the current ADL members first. We welcome motivated students who are willing to explore the (in)computability of architecture with us.
