In this class, the latest movement of community informatics is introduced, and the meanings, the possibilitis and the problems are considered as well. We will focus especially on “community informatics projects”, which aim to solve the community problems using information technology through the collaboration with various entities such as NPO, corporation, government and university. The class is for those who are interested in urban development making the best use of information technology, community innovation and policy making of community informatics.
We study matrices and vectors, in particular, how to solve the simultaneous equation, how to calculate the determinant and the inverse matrices. Moreover,
by abstracting these concepts, we study linear spaces and linear mapping.
Then a matrix can be regarded as a linear mapping. Especially, eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the matrix, and the matrix diagonalization characterize the mapping. We often encounter these concepts in other mathematical fields including statistics.
Policy issues at urban management.
This course involves the way to acquire meaningful data from the real world as a tool of problem finding and solving. The data source ranges from the space, e.g. environment monitoring, objects around us, which play critical role cyber physical systems, to human as the stakeholder of a problem. Different data sources require different ways to extract data from them, and the correct way must be used to acquire meaningful data. This course overviews social surveys using questionnaire technique, environment monitoring using state-of-art sensing technologies, and data analysis/presentation skills that are common to all the different projects.
Earthquake Disaster Laboratory -Social Design for Disaster Prevention-
Natural, Human, and Social Science Research on Disasters.
This course will cover fundamentals of calculus, which is essentially important for various research fields. Beginning with some preliminaries, we will study derivatives and integrals. For either topic, we will start from single function, and then it will be extended to multiple functions. A number of practices are prepared for deeper understanding and practical usage of derivatives and integrals.
Probability and statics are well established branches of mathematics that has applications in all areas of technology today. This course mainly presents a solid foundation for probability and the introduction of statics, explaining its ideas and techniques necessary for a firm understanding of the topic.

This course examines the communication issues of Japanese society toward accepting lingustic and cultural diversities. In particular, it is focused on the phenomena of the difference in culture, language, beliefs and customs that produce unequal power relations. Students are required to explore the aspects of culture and communication from critical perspectives to solve problems that arise from people of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds living together. Through the course, students will be expected to gain a critical perspective regarding culture and communication.

This course provides an introduction to learn how to prevent or mitigate natural disasters, especially those related to a large earthquake.
You will briefly learn the mechanism of hazards (earthquakes and tsunamis), and the disasters caused by those natural phenomena.
You will also see the limitations of disaster sciences or hardware preparedness such as sea walls, and so the importance of education and communication.
The goal of this course is to let you encourage your loved ones to prepare for earthquakes.
By the end of this course, you will properly present and explain what to do for disaster prevention, and let the fear and anxiety go away. You will also be able to give an advice to your friends on how to live and behave in an earthquake-prone country.
Data-driven Research for the Development of Smart City and Region
This Kenkyukai is conducting research activities with the goal of building data-driven smart cities and regions. Data Driven means to make decisions and take actions based on data. In today's data-driven society, more quantitative and rational ways of thinking are required instead of the conventional qualitative decision-making. In light of this social trend, we are researching how to discover, solve, and implement problems using analytical methods that utilize data.
Concretely speaking, we use geographic information systems (GIS) to analyze and map geographic data to discover problems in cities and regions, such as the environment, disaster prevention, transportation, tourism, welfare, and agriculture, to understand the causes of problems and their relationship to the people living there, to propose solutions for an ultra-smart society, and to provide policy support. We also propose solutions for an ultra-smart society and provide policy support. We are a research group that can discover problems, devise solutions, and implement them, which is a characteristic of SFC.
Health Science
The research group aims to clarify the scientific basis of food and supplements, and to achieve health from the perspective of medical food and the same source. Students will learn through reading in circles, group work, and basic experiments in order to improve their basic knowledge of metabolism, nutrition, and health. Eventually, we would like to expand our activities to social activities in collaboration with various other research group projects working on IT, policy, city planning, etc. Research is not all pleasure, but it also requires persistent mental strength. We welcome those who can find delight in actually working with their hands and creating new concepts, not just knowledge.
Health Science
This research group aims to develop the results of another research group that focuses on basic research (“Research Group2”, please take a look at it) into social applications. In this research group, we will cooperate with various corporations, local governments, civic organizations, and other research group projects in the field of English education, IT, policy, and community development to achieve a society where people can live happily.
