In contemporary societies across the world, people with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds encounter and share their living and working environment. What kind of language phenomenon arise in such multilinguistic and multicultural societies? What kind of linguistic and educational policies should be adopted in relation to this diversity? How do people use languages and what kind of problems do they encounter in multicultural settings? In this research project, we will ask and reflect upon questions such as these, seeking to understand linguistic phenomena; to examine, assess and propose linguistic, cultural, and educational policies; and to inquire into how to spread social awareness on problems and challenges regarding coexistence in multilinguistic and multicultural societies.
The research project will consist of (1) collaborative research projects on language, culture and society organized by the participating faculty members and graduate students, and (2) advisory sessions centered on the presentations of the students about the progress of their individual research.
Forest Science and Engineering
This seminar covers Japan’s forests/timberland, forestry operations, lumber production and wooden architecture. Current issues will be approached from innovative angles and new solutions will be proposed.
This class is designed as an introduction to Japanese policies in sub-Saharan Africa, and how these policies relate to the Tokyo International Conference on African Development. TICAD has been the centerpiece of Japan's policy in Africa since its inception in 1992.As the Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized TICAD VII 2019, there are many issues to consider in order to realize the goals of increased trade, aid, connection between Japan and Africa under COVID19. Although the results of previous conferences had been constructive, there remains an "information gap" between the policies and intents of the Japanese government and business community, and the response and knowledge of the Japanese citizen as to the recent history, the varied cultures and issues in Africa today. By investigating both large-scale and small scale investment, tourism and educational, in particular agricultural connections and N.G.O. endeavors and the goals and effects of the Japanese policies themselves, the course will explore methods by which the goals of the government's policies in Africa can be made accessible to Japanese society as a whole.
*This course was supposed to be offered as the combination of full-online and SBC academic camp but considering the present situation of COVID19, we have to give up SBC stay. We will be flexible to change the program and if the situation improves we will come back to the program combining SBC academic camp and on-line. Thank you for your understanding.
The course will begin with a short series of introductory lectures on the history of Africa, and the Africa's part in the development of agricultural system along with visits from Japanese nationals who have recently returned from projects in Africa. There are many people from African countires to join training sessions on agricalture in Japan. Especially this semester under COVID19, we persue our susutainable global connection between African Countries and Japan focusing on the cultures, community building, agriculture. So in order to realize our goals everybody should know and experience gateways to Japanese agriculture in our neighborhood. Then you are ready to understand African countries in reality. The course will then focus on some countries: South Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, and 2 or 3 other countries. Although all the lectures are offered on line, we reorganized class as combination of on-line lectures and Study Camp at SBC + Farm experience on the farm field in Endo Area around SFC campus. The aim of this course is to be interactive and experience-based(agriculture) even courses on Fridays are offered on-line. We will welcome guest speakers both from African countries and from Japan which means you will have many opportunities to meet diversity of people, have active group discussions, make some projects with your friends, realize the projects, have actual fieldwork on the farm, even on-line. As a goal of the course, you persue and make actual project plans for you, the next generation, to become friends and to be sustainable partners for the future.
Service infrastructure for collecting data via networks and constructing computing resources such as IoT and big data is rapidly spreading. This is a service form that has further evolved the infrastructure in which networking and computing have been integrated recently called cloud and is realized by combining software components present on the network and computational resources virtualized by software ing.
Therefore, in this lecture we will review the basics of conventional network technology and computing technology, and acquire elemental technologies of infrastructure built across both fields based on that knowledge.
Forest Science and Engineering covers forests/timberland, forestry, lumber production and wooden architecture. The subject of this course focuses on forests/timberland and forestry operations situated upstream, and the other subject focuses on lumber production and wooden architecture located downstream. This course teaches specialized knowledge and examines the current overall situation together with the technologies and social systems that are associated with the existing issues and problems. Students are expected to gain specialized knowledge, deepen their understanding of the subject matter, and develop their own views and opinions.
The forests/timberland which account for 67% of Japan’s total land and all the related industries are closely tied to our daily life. The currently observed issues associated with forests/timberland, lumber production and wooden architecture are serving as a mirror that clearly reflects those aspects that Japan’s technology development and social system designing have lost sight of.
In the future, the students taking this course may not choose a profession that requires the knowledge covered in this course, but it is intended to equip them with expansive and deep thinking needed for each crucial decision making.
This lecture series focuses on sense of touch. Our daily lives become more comfortable than previous one thanks to technical advancement (transportation, telecommunication, and infrastructure). We rarely get dirty and injured from daily activities as long as we live an ordinary life.
Such trend makes us reconsider the importance of actual experience. Hands-on workshop is now popular content for most of people, implying direct experience is needed for many people. Direct experience is highly related to touch sense, which is personal and subjective experience.
This lecture introduces the science of haptic experience and also present current haptic technology. Hands-on demo is provided in some lectures in order to attract broader interests from students.
Scientific Writing Workshop teaches how to state facts, communicate your opinions and share your thoughts with others. The methods and techniques covered in this workshop are common among scientific and technical papers as to the kata (forms). Students are taught how to write scientific and technical papers and how those papers are evaluated.
You can be a Humanities student or a Sciences student to take this workshop. It is more difficult to write Humanities papers. Learning how to write scientific and technical papers first as a basic skill is therefore highly recommended.
The first half of this workshop covers what is taught in elementary schools in the Western world. The skills you will learn will prove to be very important in the future when you become a global leader dealing with Westerners who were taught the skills in school.
Intercultural Communication -A critical perspective
This seminar aims to explore and examine our intercultural communication from a critical perspective. Culture is in fact influenced by economic and political issues which create unequal relations of power between peoples. Therefore, it is imperative that we understand the politics at work in an intercultural context and develop critical literacy. We will examine intercultural communication throughout reading and discussing a book or some articles. Students will also conduct a research/project on related topics to assigned literature or graduate thesis.
In this lecture, we will deal with data, AI-based art creation, and storytelling. This year, we will work on image generation using the latest AI image generation technology. In particular, we will work on generating images based on text input by combining VQ-VAE and CLIP models. At the same time, we will mint the AI-generated images as NFTs and try to speculate on what will happen when data-based "art" is connected to the art market. After each student has worked on his or her own work, the final session will be a critique session with guests.

We have to manage ecosystem services and natural capital for sustainable development of human beings, which has become an international consensus since the end of 20 century and was popularized by the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) in the early 2000s. Natural capital is the world's stock of natural resources. Natural capital assets provide people with a broad range of free goods and services, called ecosystem services, which underpin our economy and society and some of which even make human life possible. Green infrastructure has been widely paid attention as a key concept for wise use and management of ecosystem services. Green infrastructure occurs at all scales. It is most often associated with storm water management systems, which are smart and cost-effective. However, green infrastructure is a bigger concept and is closely associated with many other things.
This project analyzes public and economic policies. It also deals with consensus building and governance issues in policy making. It is especially important for participants to research and present their specific research themes with a clear awareness of the subjects. From time to time, we would like to set up a special lecture and a place to discuss timely topics related to public policy and so on.
