In this class you will listen to a variety of materials (podcasts, music, stories, news, etc.) and answer simple questions about them. You will work at your own pace. There will also be optional interviews with the teacher for added speaking practice. Although this class has a live part, it can also be taken on-demand.
With the enactment of Paris Agreement and the UN SDGs both in 2015, human society is advancing toward a new paradigm that overcome the negative impact of industrialization and find a new way to motor economic growth. It is full of uncertainty and risks without established solutions with conventional social and economic systems. This course is designated to share advanced ideas and technologies to tackle global risks toward resilient and sustainable society through innovations of technology, business models, policy and regulation.
In contemporary societies across the world, people with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds encounter and share their living and working environment. What kind of language phenomenon arise in such multilinguistic and multicultural societies? What kind of linguistic and educational policies should be adopted in relation to this diversity? How do people use languages and what kind of problems do they encounter in multicultural settings? In this research project, we will ask and reflect upon questions such as these, seeking to understand linguistic phenomena; to examine, assess and propose linguistic, cultural, and educational policies; and to inquire into how to spread social awareness on problems and challenges regarding coexistence in multilinguistic and multicultural societies.
The research project will consist of (1) collaborative research projects on language, culture and society organized by the participating faculty members and graduate students, and (2) advisory sessions centered on the presentations of the students about the progress of their individual research.
This project aims at establishing research methodology to examine and discuss "experience in life". The issues are to develop academic disciplines and techniques to
(1) verbalize on
(2) encourage and enrich
(3) pass onto others and younger generation
one's own experiences.
As the globalization of our physical and virtual space proceeds, understanding our multi-lingual and multi-cultural community and the ability to communicate with others are becoming gaining in importance. Foreign language education, which is based on diverse languages, aims to educate human resources, fostering leaders who can solve diverse societal problems. At the same time this project will instruct the participants in the basics of the foreign language education research, not only focusing on the practical approach but also on how to conduct quantitative experimental research as well as qualitative empirical research.
This project analyzes public and economic policies. It also deals with consensus building and governance issues in policy making. It is especially important for participants to research and present their specific research themes with a clear awareness of the subjects. From time to time, we would like to set up a special lecture and a place to discuss timely topics related to public policy and so on.
In this class students will read a variety of literature by some of Japan's representative authors, and translate it into English.
This lecture gives knowledge and experience on network security which is necessary in various scenes of cyber security work.
At the beginning of this lecture we outline various network technologies centered on Internet Protocol (IP), and explain important protocols regarding security and various security mechanisms. We also set up opportunities to master hands-on skills through setting up and monitoring practical equipment such as firewalls and IDS. Students can acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for practical business such as design, construction, operation, etc. on network security through this lecture.
This lecture provides opportunities to acquire knowledge and skills related to advanced network security related to society.
This course will examine quantitative research methods and statistical analysis of data with a particular focus on analyzing, understanding, and interpreting statistical results in research. The course will utilize the basic foundations of quantitative methods (e.g., correlation, regression, means comparisons, and chi-square tests) and examine how these are used in designing and reporting research.
This course is for people who have some prior experience with statistics, but you do not need a high level of ability (or confidence) in math to succeed in this course. We will look at what is required to analyze a variety of statistical tests, and while this means that students will need to run sample data and report results, the focus will be on what the results mean rather than the specific calculations that lead us to those results. To that end, this course looks at the concepts, interpretations, and applications of statistics rather than the math itself. This course will be discussion-based and NOT lecture based, so students should also come prepared and ready to participate each class.
NOTE: This class will be held both online and via weekly Zoom discussions. Lectures, readings, & assignments will be delivered in an on-demand format (due every Tuesday, 9:00 A.M.), and will be supplemented with regular Q&A/Discussion sessions over Zoom each week at 14:45.

Cyber security is becoming more important as a foundation to support the information society and the IoT society in the future. In practicing cyber security, not only technical knowledge but also comprehensive efforts on various matters such as organizational management, ergonomics, law, and policy are required.
This course takes up cases such as various cyber security incidents that actually occurred, analyzes them from various aspects, what kind of advance measures were necessary, and technical measures to prevent such cases. , Discuss cyber security initiatives that will be required in the future, such as policy measures. In addition, through these analyzes, we will deepen our understanding of the knowledge, skills, and sense required of cyber security personnel.
In this course, we will take up cases that represent various aspects of cyber security, bring the results of each analysis, and discuss them. Through this process, you will deepen your understanding of realistic cyber security issues and use various knowledge about complex issues to experience the process of problem solving and decision making in a simulated manner and acquire the abilities necessary for problem solving in the real world.
In Fundamentals of Information Technology 2, the goal is to take what you learned in Fundamentals of Information Technology 1 further and create a program of a certain size by yourself.
When creating a program, it is rare that you create everything yourself from nothing at all, and usually you create it using ready-made parts called libraries. There are many types of libraries depending on what you want to make, but this time we will use a library called Pyxel for making retro 2D games.
At first, we will use Pyxel to review Fundamentals of Information Technology 1 and study Python features that were not covered in Fundamentals of Information Technology 1. After that, we will make our own original game.
This course will aim to acquire skills necessary fore security measures and mechanism and practice concerning mainly cryptographic technology, which is the central technology of the security field, and data management.
The course will explain various mechanisms for protecting data and its basic technology which is cryptography.
Explanations on cryptography technology will include details of each algorithms, points of special attention concerning generating keys and their handling during application of algorithms to various systems , and also knowledge necessary for handling of cryptography technology such as protocols for telecommunication.
Data protection and encryption technology plays an important role in the present and future information use, and students from a wide range of fields concerning information utilization are expected.
Korean is one of the easiest language for Japanese speakers to learn(and vice versa). There are many reasons: (1) same word order, (2) grammatical similarity, (3) a number of kanji words shared in Japanese and Korean, (4) cultural similarity. It takes relatively short time from zero to fluency.
We have to manage ecosystem services and natural capital for sustainable development of human beings, which has become an international consensus since the end of 20 century and was popularized by the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) in the early 2000s. Natural capital is the world's stock of natural resources. Natural capital assets provide people with a broad range of free goods and services, called ecosystem services, which underpin our economy and society and some of which even make human life possible. Green infrastructure has been widely paid attention as a key concept for wise use and management of ecosystem services. Green infrastructure occurs at all scales. It is most often associated with storm water management systems, which are smart and cost-effective. However, green infrastructure is a bigger concept and is closely associated with many other things.
