The Japanese labour market is currently at a major turning point, particularly among highly educated people, and is becoming increasingly fluid. From the perspective of companies on the demand side, it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain traditional Japanese-style employment practices such as lump-sum graduate recruitment, lifetime employment and seniority-based wages, etc. In 2019, Mr Nakanishi, then chairman of Nippon Keidanren, referred to this issue, stating that 'it will be difficult for companies to continue lifetime employment in the future'. Correspondingly, from the perspective of individuals on the supply side, according to NLI Research Institute (2020), young people tend to be more 'career-focused' and less 'workplace-loyal'. As a result, a survey by the PERSOL Research and Consulting (2022) also found that "there is a noticeable trend towards a positive change in the image of changing jobs in early 20s among young people compared to other age groups", indicating that the career views of young people are changing significantly.

In response to this situation, the 'Guidelines for Integrated Three-Pronged Labor Market Reforms' shown by the Government's Council of New Form of Capitalism Realization on 16 May 2023, presents the idea that individuals taking career ownership will also contribute to the growth of the Japanese economy, and the direction of three-pronged reform based on this idea.

In these changing times, career design, which provides employment stability, is becoming increasingly important from the individual's perspective, while talent management, which provides stability in securing human resources, is becoming increasingly important from the organisational perspective.

The individual's perspective and the company's perspective are two sides of the same coin: securing employment and securing human resources. Therefore, it is considered effective to build respective strategies based on an understanding of the position, logic, types and trends of the other side. In other words, understanding the position, logic, types and trends of individual career design enables the organisation to realize efficient and effective talent management to attract talented people and achieve individual and organisational growth. Conversely, it is only by understanding the position, logic, types and trends of organisational talent management that individuals can design their career appropriately for themselves and their clients, according to individual preferences, abilities, characteristics and career stages.

In this lecture, in light of this historical background, career design and talent management will be discussed in an integrated manner.

This lecture will discuss the role of the media in policy formation from various perspectives. The media is called the fourth power after the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. In the past, mass communication such as newspapers and television was the main form of communication, but now electronic media such as the Internet and SNS also have great influence. The media not only checks power, but also plays a large role in shaping public opinion. The two roles of checking power and shaping public opinion will also play important roles in policy formation. Those who hold the reins of power in the executive branch and those who draft bills in the legislative branch place particular importance on the power of newspaper editorials. In this lecture, eleven editorial and editorial board members who write editorials and signed columns at the Nihon Keizai Shimbun will discuss the role of the media in policy formation in their respective fields of expertise. The first half of the 14 lectures will discuss the transformation of media due to digitalization and its relationship with domestic policy formation, and the second half will discuss the relationship between policy formation and the media in various countries such as the United States, China, and South Korea.

This is a hands-on class that will help you develop "writing expression = writing skills" that will last a lifetime. The basic class is face-to-face. You will be surprised at how deeply you can express your inner self and have the "joy of writing". It is a "moving" class where you will be moved by the expressions of other students. If you train your ability to think, your ability to express yourself will grow to a comfortable level. First, students learn how to think in order to be able to express their thoughts in words (self-expression and thinking ability). Next, you will be able to convey what you want to say in a way that resonates with others (written expression skills that work in a situation, ways of communicating that enhance media skills). Furthermore, you will develop your ability to express yourself in writing so that you can write persuasively in society, for example, to be hired for job hunting or to attract collaborators on social networking sites (writing skills that open up the results you are aiming for). You will be able to discover subjects that only you can write about, and your originality will flourish (creative and original expression skills). You will be moved by the expressions of other students, make discoveries for yourself, and hone your ability to express yourself in a deep and realistic way with other students in the course. We encourage you to write your best writing in this class and say, "This is what I wrote when I was a student. You have the power to write.

This course aims to improve students' problem-finding and presentation skills by taking up real-world themes and discussing solutions to these issues in group work.
Both problem-solving and presentation skills are skills that can be improved through experience.
In order to steadily improve these skills in a short period of time, group work (future planning) on three different topics will be conducted in class. The entire process of discussion, preparation of materials, presentation, and evaluation of presentations contributes to the improvement of skills.
As a rule, the themes covered in class change each year. Most of the themes are related to issues actually faced by companies and other organizations in the real world, and each group work will be presented by a company.
The companies participating in the 2023 program are currently being finalized and will be announced at the first class.

Japan is currently facing the problem of a shrinking society characterised by the low birthrate, the ageing, the declining population and the change of household structures. The new challenges arising from the climate change cannot be also overlooked. In this lecture, we will focus on Germany, which faces similar challenges to Japan. In contrast to the UK and France, where there was a concentration of urbanisation in London and Paris, the urbanisation has been progressed in Germany by maintaining a polycentric structure, and the cities are now developing an urban planning programme in collaboration with the federal and state governments in order to ensure the future development potential of the city. The aim of this lecture is to clarify the characteristics of German cities using this programme as a guide, and to gain implications for regional revitalisation in Japan.

The course aims to teach the skills and concepts necessary for creating documents through practice. The course focuses on document creation as a step in "information production" and covers many methodologies, especially those related to structuring and communicating information. In structuring information, we will focus on requirements analysis and outlining to discover what needs to be written and formulate it into a document. Regarding communication, we will follow the concept of paragraph writing and aim to learn how to express information to allow the reader to understand what is being communicated efficiently and without misunderstanding. We will also engage in group discussions, peer review (an activity in which students critique each other's documents and give advice to each other), and publishing the learning process online.

In this course, we share the idea of "pattern language", which is a language describing practical knowledge in a certain domain of creative practice, and how to create it.

The original idea of pattern languages was proposed by architect Christopher Alexander. The late 1970’s book he wrote with his colleagues contained 253 patterns on practical architectural design. In the context of architecture, the pattern language was developed in order to serve a lingua franca for designing buildings between architects and residents. Alexander anticipated that people could get involved in the designing process of their homes and towns. Ten years after the book was published, Alexander’s idea of pattern languages was adopted in the field of software design.

Since the 2000’s, the fields in which pattern languages are applied have shown even more expansion to cover creative human actions such as education, learning, presentation, collaboration, social innovation, policy making, disaster prevention, life design and even beauty in daily life.

Pattern languages are now used to connect all kinds of people with all kinds of different experiences. The patterns help bring light to the less noticeable parts of a person’s experience, so the person can reconsider the experience to talk about it and share it with others.

In the classes, you will learn the concept and cases of pattern language.

The main topic is embodied intelligence. Students will learn and discuss how embodied intelligence is created through interactions between doing by body, feeling bodily sensations, verbalizing how body feels and think by words. Conventionally, studies on embodied intelligence have been done through objective observation of movements of body, but that does not suffice to reveal important aspects of embodied intelligence, which is relations between body movements and one's own thoughts and verbalization.

Scientific Writing Workshop teaches how to state facts, communicate your opinions and share your thoughts with others. The methods and techniques covered in this workshop are common among scientific and technical papers as to the kata (forms). Students are taught how to write scientific and technical papers and how those papers are evaluated.

You can be a Humanities student or a Sciences student to take this workshop. It is more difficult to write Humanities papers. Learning how to write scientific and technical papers first as a basic skill is therefore highly recommended.

The first half of this workshop covers what is taught in elementary schools in the Western world. The skills you will learn will prove to be very important in the future when you become a global leader dealing with Westerners who were taught the skills in school.
