This course is about consolidating the techniques of academic presentations. The course takes place in the spring, meeting once a week and face to face. The two main components of the course are speaking and discussion.
Topics for presentations mirror critical issues that are ongoing either in the wider society or in the field of academia. Discussions that follow these presentations are an important part of the course. They do play a role in the overall grading as they are meant to strengthen students' ability to communicate objectively and to maximize interaction with fellow learners.

This course explores and examines multicultural communication in Japanese society. In the first half of the semester, we will examine Identity, Othering, and Representation, with a particular emphasis on the complex nature of culture as a fluid and creative social force, which is both constructed by and constructs people. We will also explore the following questions: What power dynamics exist within our multicultural relationships in Japan? How do we position ourselves in intercultural encounters in different contexts? In what ways can individuals confront cultural and linguistic inequality, and what positive changes can we make in our communities towards cultural and linguistic diversity? Later in the semester, group discussions will be held to explore the issues presented by the students themselves.

The course focuses on analyzing choice from two perspectives: "freedom to choose" and "freedom from choosing." Rationalists argue that bad choices result from poor decision-making and that individuals are to blame. However, how people make or avoid making choices is influenced not only by personal factors but also by the social environment in which decision-making occurs.

Poor or good choice-making can be influenced by various conditions, which may be attributed to individuals and/or the social environment:

    Income constraints (environment/individual)
    Lack of knowledge (environment/individual)
    Lack of information (environment/individual)
    Lack of [good] choices (environment)
    Limited access to choices (environment/individual)
Lack of freedom or too much freedom (environment)
    Laziness or decision-making fatigue (environment/individual)
Analyzing choice behaviors by considering these conditions can help uncover underlying problems and improve solutions.

The course draws on arguments from the works of Daniel Kahneman, Cass R. Sunstein, Richard Thaler, Peter L. Berger and T. Luckmann, Niklas Luhmann, Herbert A. Simon, among others.

The course focuses on the analysis of choice from the two perspectives: “freedom to choose” and “freedom from choosing.” Rationalists argue that bad choices are the result of bad decision-making and the individuals are the ones to blame. How people make or do not make choices are, in fact, influenced not only by who they are, but also by the social environment where the decision-making takes place. Poor/good choice-making are the consequences of the following conditions which can be attributed to the individuals and/or the social environment: 1.Income constraints (environment/individual); and/or 2. Lack of knowledge (environment/individual); and/or 3. Lack of information (environment/individual); and/or 4. Lack of [good] choices (environment); and/or 5. Limited access to choices (environment/individual); and/or 6. Lack of freedom or Too much Freedom (environment); and/or 7. Laziness/ Decision [making] Fatigue (environment/ individual)
Analysis of choice behaviors and how people make choices by considering these conditions above would help uncover where the problems may lie, thus improving the solution matters.

In this course, you will learn about "pattern language," which captures the essence of good practices and articulates them in words. You will also engage in crafting works that express and share these patterns as stories (manga, picture books, or songs).
The course begins with an overview of pattern language and examples from fields such as education, work, welfare, daily life, and personal growth. In the second half of the semester, you will individually choose to express these patterns through either manga, picture books, or songs.
While we highly welcome those skilled in drawing or composing music, it is not necessary to have these skills. With the aid of generative AI, you can still craft fascinating works on your own. This course will involve the use of generative AI as needed, focusing on crafting Practice-Inspiring Stories that support the practices of others.

Humans began with Art. The concept naturally emerged, when we created classifications in our minds, embraced feelings, or named objects. Words, letters, constellations, name of the newborn, cave murals... Art is at the origin of human intellectual and emotional activities, and the world we perceive is Art itself.

The purpose of this course is to expose students to a wide range of interpretations of art and to foster creativity through practice. The class will consist of (1) Lecture and (2) Training sessions to deepen students' understanding of the creative act

In the Lectures, we will focus on cultural sciences (philosophy, linguistics, semiotics, psychology, mathematics..) and examine various case studies of conceptualization. As Training, students will work on a pop quiz related to the lecture context and strengthen their unique expression. Students will be encouraged to discuss the topics and become familiar with the open dialog.

I believe that actual practice is the fastest way to learn about Art. Therefore, the final assignment will be creating your own artwork with the summarized text explaining the work. The final deliverable can be in any style, media, and technique. Excellent works will be requested for presentation at the end of the term.

By confronting Art through the creator's perspective, I aim to have students discover their view of Art and acquire the ability to express their inner voice. I hope that the experience gained in this lecture will provide hints for actively living through the coming era.
