The objective of this course is to understand the ‘trajectory’ of Japan-US Relations through historical analysis. The course will cover the period since Commodore Perry first came to Japan to the present. However, it will not simply be a history of state-to-state relations but more on how people in Japan perceived American presence in the Asia-Pacific region. The course is intended to explore and understand modern (近現代/KINGENDAI) Japan through the prism of Japanese perception of the US.

Why does scientific advice on nutrition keep changing? Does hydroxychloroquine cure coronavirus? How can we tell the difference between a scientific breakthrough and fake news? And how can a budding scientist do exciting research that will save the world and land you a job without following in the footsteps of the fraudsters and spin artists who have been taken down by scientific scandals? This course will look closely at some of the worst examples of science gone wrong from across all disciplines, including RIKEN’s faked stem cell images, the over-hyped “Mozart effect”, scientific racism in IQ and skull measurements, and Excel errors in GDP:debt ratio calculations. Taught by someone with first-hand experience both with using open science and with retracting a high-profile journal article, we will have frank discussions about the perverse incentives that select for unethical science practices and how we might fix them.

With the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, sports promotion is accelerating in Japan. On the other hand, in recent years, the implementation rate of sports for the people has been declining, and it is not an environment in which everyone can enjoy sports. In order to promote sports, a wide range of knowledge is required from individual aspects such as mental and physical structure to environmental aspects such as the social and cultural background surrounding sports and the management of sports organizations. In this course, you will learn about issues in promoting sports, thinking methods for solving those issues, and an overview of social implementations. In this course, discussions and group work will be held as needed in order to gain diverse values and perspectives through communication with others and sports experiences.

The purpose of this course is to deepen the understanding of the society and culture of the Arab world. Interest in the Arab world in Japan tends to be biased towards political and economic issues such as terrorism and oil, and unfortunately there is still a strong lack of understanding and prejudice towards the daily lives and culture of the people living there. In this course, we will introduce not only the historical heritage of the Arab world, but also a wide range of contemporary life and culture, in order to touch upon the realities of contemporary Arab culture, which has been influenced by the changes of the times, such as modernization, popularization, informatization, and globalization, and to challenge the uniform perception of the Arab world. In particular, there will be opportunities to discuss examples of clothing, music, and movies from a gender perspective in order to break down stereotypes about Arab women.

This class is an environmental design practice studio that integrates architecture, urban design, and landscape architecture.
Architecture is necessary for people to live. Architecture is an artificial work, but human life is deeply related to nature in many ways. Human beings are a part of nature, and getting close to nature is a basic human desire. On the other hand, nature sometimes shows a life-threatening appearance. The fundamental role of architecture is to protect human life from the harsh aspects of nature, and at the same time, enjoy the blessings of nature and enjoy it from the bottom of our hearts.
Students will draw a new landscape image of the subject region by presenting a design for a given theme or the found problem after analyzing the region's situation with open data and information technology. Students are expected to understand the environmental strategy that builds the relationship between nature and human beings and acquire skills.

In 2007, the United Nations estimated that, for the first time, more than half of the world’s population lived in cities. The ongoing urbanization of the human population represents an enormous change for our environmental, economic, social, and cultural practices. The creation and operation of cities is a leading contributor to climate change, and the way we manage architecture, infrastructure, and landscape must change if we are to avoid its worst effects. Designing sustainable cities has become an imperative. At the same time, the city is a cultural landscape. From its origins in antiquity, the city has been a place for the exchange of goods and ideas and place for us to congregate and share in the riches of a public realm. Cities are, perhaps, our greatest artistic achievement as a species.

The central question asked by this course is: how do we balance the ecological and social imperatives of our time with the economic and aesthetic functions of the city especially for the unpredictable future?

There is no easy answer to this question, but in our pursuit of one we will investigate theories, technologies, and practices of city making in broad terms. Historical episodes in the development of architecture, infrastructure, and urban planning will be examined to provide context for our analysis of the contemporary city as a complex system. Throughout the course, both Japanese and global examples will be considered by inviting practitioners and theorists from different design fields. Key topics covered include aesthetics, demographic change, design, energy use, economics, and social patterns insofar as these influence the processes and outcomes of urbanization. Students are encouraged to be critical of the concepts presented and to form and express their own opinions.

A recent advance in brain measurement and analysis techniques has enabled to read human brain information non-invasively, to uncover brain functions, and to link a brain and a machine/computer. In this class, we will study neural mechanisms of information transmission by action potentials and brain measurement techniques (physical principles, advantages and disadvantages, analysis algorithms) such as EEG, MEG, and MRI. Furthermore, we will focus on recent technologies such as brain machine/computer interfaces and brain decoding.

In this class, we first learn to use corpus to explore how we understand meanings of each word and how the lexicon is structured in the mind. We then discuss the following issues. 1) In what degree are linguistic categories diverse across different languages? Is there any universality in the way different languages carve up the world?; 2) To what extent does our thought depend on language? ; 3) to what extent is children’s conceptual development shaped by language learning?

During the first half (1-7th time), you will learn how to insert a recombinant gene into a plasmid vector and analyze its gene expression in the bacteria Escherichia coli. During the last half (8-14th time), you will learn how to culture human cells, transfect plasmids, and edit the human genome using the CRISPR/Cas9 system.

Analytical chemistry is one of the essential sciences needed in advancing medical, pharmaceutical, food and environmental researches. Due to technological advancement in analytical instruments, operators can now obtain analytical results easily without the need of understanding the underlying principles of the instruments. The purpose of this lecture is to discuss the basis of analytical chemistry that is used in advanced biosciences.

The main objective of the lecture is to achieve a comprehensive understanding of biochemistry that is closely liked to physiology and/or pathology.
The metabolic enzymes had widely been identified and investigated in the 20th century. The old academic theme, however, has greatly expanded mainly by the development of analytical technologies. The recent advances in molecular biology are built on the knowledge of basic biochemistry.
