Japanese Language Skills 1C (Contemporary Society) is a class for students who are in the first half of their advanced level of Japanese. The goal of this course is to help students understand contemporary society and community, especially SFC as a learning community, and to enable them to learn better at SFC. Specific activities will include reading texts about SFC and learning at SFC, discussing the contents, and writing opinion papers on the topic. Vocabulary, kanji, and grammar related to the theme will also be studied.
Arabic skills course aims at further development of knowledge learned in intensive course and establishment of practical Arabic skills. Every semester, Skill 1 to Skill 4 are offered. Please note that contents and levels of each class are different. This course can be taken repeatedly.

In this course, students will learn advanced Japanese writing skills that their reader(s) will understand easily what they want to convey. Also, students will be required to write essays, so that they will have confidence in their academic writing skills to attend lectures conducted in Japanese.
This course is designed for students at the lower advanced level of Japanese and focuses on the training of writing academic essays. In this course, students will be required to read models of logical writings and learn their structure and expressions to tackle writing assignments and acquire the skills needed to write logical essays. As students write their 1500 character essays, they will also learn how to make outlines and structure their academic essays in Japanese.
This course is designed for students at the upper advanced level of Japanese and mainly targets at international and returnee students.
In this course, students will learn the process of writing academic essays and will become able to represent their ideas in logical sequence on paper at the end of this course.
Students are required to frame an argumentative essay through 13 lectures in which they need to express their opinions on the basis of precise information.
In addition, they are also required to get involved in both pair work and group work activities to aim at writing essays from the reader's viewpoint.
This course is designed for students at the upper advanced level of Japanese and aims at developing their academic oral presentation skills. In this course, students will learn the following topics by taking related lectures or discussing with their classmates: - basic structure of presentation - criteria for a good presentation - how to prepare for the oral presentation Those who want to improve their skills required for not only a presentation in lectures but also the one of graduation theses are most welcome.
This course is designed for both international students and returnees. In this course, students will be taught essential skills to effectively learn from lectures at university. More specifically, they will learn how to grasp the key points of a lecture or how to take notes through watching a short lecture video. They will also learn necessary vocabularies and expressions by reading
a syllabus of a lecture they are interested in. Sometimes they will be required to make a brief presentation as well as write a short essay. In the latter half of this course, students will have a chance to discuss about the lecture they plan to take in the future with a lecturer.
At the end of this course, students will be expected to become able to attend any lectures offered in Japanese proactively and confidently.

“A book must be the axe for the frozen sea within us.” –Franz Kafka
Though Kafka was referring to the act of reading with this comment, I believe that this idea can be extended to the process of writing. I would like to help each student to use his/her own “axe” to strike against the “frozen sea” of his/her inner self. I am especially interested in guiding students to create works of experimental literature (writing that uses innovative techniques to produce highly unique and expressive material). The course will be conducted as a workshop, with students generating new artistic output in each class. Students will receive extensive feedback on their work, which they will incorporate into the practice of rewriting the piece for homework. We will read poetry and short stories, watch short videos, and view images that induce a literary response. Students will submit an anthology of the best writing they’ve done throughout the course as a final project.

The class is designed for the students who have never learned Chinese before. Students will mainly focus on practicing their Chinese pronunciation and studying new grammars and vocabularies in order to communicate in Chinese with each other. The class is taught by both native and Japanese teachers, using a unique teaching method called “Direct Introductory Method”.
