    Entrepreneurship and Management

    The accelerating change from providing products and services based on mass production and mass consumption to an era that requires an individualized response. In other words, the products and services of the next generation must be in line with the decisions of individuals. In this seminar, we will study the processes and strategies necessary for the creation and operation of businesses that will become the foundation of a new society and the ideal form of entrepreneurs who will implement these processes and strategies, using a variety of cases (examples).

    Entrepreneurship is often referred to as "entrepreneurship" these days, but the term "entrepreneur" refers to an "entrepreneur," and the term "ship" refers not to a spirit but to a "way of being. This has been a universal concept since Schumpeter defined creative destruction (innovation) as the essence of capitalism in his book "Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy" published in 1942, and called entrepreneurship the ideal form of the entrepreneur who carries out such innovation.

    The purpose of this study group is to develop a keen and rich sensitivity to discriminate between right and wrong, beauty and ugliness, which is essential for entrepreneurship, a prerequisite for future leaders, tolerance to listen to diverse values that differ from one's own, and the ability to take action and produce results by overcoming all kinds of resistance and opposition.

    Landscape studies

    This seminar concentrates on landscape studies. In Japan, landscape sometimes means only visible features of an area of land, but invisible factors, such as historical background, natural and social environment, and so on, are critical. Students can approach everything related to the landscape. This seminar's keywords are below; ecology, city and rural planning, garden and park, urban green space, civil vitalization, land-use change, environmental education, reconstruction in the disaster field, disaster prevention, and land use plan in a river basin. All students have their own themes. Some students hold a presentation in each class. If you require to join a project, please see the syllabus of the seminar "Green Infrastructure." In this seminar, we will also emphasize discussion of the presentations. In addition, this seminar requires students to read a lot of articles and books.

    About NeuroMusic Lab

    We research Neurosciences and Music (NeuroMusic) to understand why music is so fundamental to humans. We believe that music can be a prove to identify higher-order brain functions such as skilled motor control and learning, perception, cognition, memory, emotion and creativity in humans. We aim to clarify the origin of our musicality in the brain to augment the possibility of music for harmonious future.


    Interests in the Neurosciences of Music has grown rapidly over the last few decades. However, there has been almost no laboratory for this field in Japan, despite a growing recognition of the need to understand the neural origin of our musicality. The NeuroMusicLab at Keio SFC (The Neurosciences and Music Laboratory at Keio University Shonan Fujisawa Campus) was founded by Dr. Shinya Fujii to address this need.

    deepSHITSUKAN Lab 1: expression of material quality and its fabrication process

    The main objective of this lab is to facilitate digital fabrication concerning body perception (haptics and tactile feelings). Combining the basic level of engineering, behavioral science, and psychological study, we implement haptic technology in real life in multiple contexts.     Media Studies (1) Comparative Media Studies / Medienvergleich (2) Learning Design Project (LDP) *The two projects are possible both as separate projects and as collaborations.

    This Seminar consists of two projects: (1) Comparative Media Studies and (2) Learning Environment Design. Participants are required to choose either project depending on their individual research theme, however, a later change is also possible. In this group work-based seminar the students are expected to participate and contribute actively. They will also receive feedback on the content of their own projects. In addition to this seminar’s group work, participants are expected to work with resources not related to their own native language.
    Details are as follows:
    (1) Comparative media research project
    Information related to news and events we come into contact with every day is presented in a variety of media in the form of "words," "pictures," and "videos." The content is shared not only in Japan but also worldwide, such as COVID-19, air pollution, global warming, and the energy transition.
    This news content is presented from various perspectives, even on familiar topics. Different broadcast "languages," such as English, German, French, Chinese, Korean, etc., convey different content compared to news content broadcast in Japanese. Differences in media language can also lead to variations in published images, chosen expressions, focus, presentation of issues, etc. Where do these "differences" come from exactly? What do the differences in media representation signify? In this workshop, we will guide the participants in discovering and discussing these issues by raising as questions. The topics will be based on individual awareness of issues in different fields (culture, society, education, literature, religion, art, feminism, sport, etc.). They will be discussed and explored using the collected materials. Some research topics to date have included a comparative analysis of German, British, and US newspaper articles on March 11, the overseas reception of Japanese cartoons and their analysis, a comparison of Japanese and European musical performances, a comparison of non-verbal communication functions in political speeches in Japan and the US, a comparative analysis of clothing design advertising in Japan and the US, and a comparative analysis of sports articles. Investigate the differences between the Japanese and English perspectives on the publication of sports articles, reception, and analysis of literary works through translation, etc.

    (2) Designing a learning environment Learning Design Project (LDP)
    Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the learning environment surrounding us has transitioned from the era when paper-based media dominated to digital media and web-based learning. Each learner needs to create their own learning style by their preferences, utilizing various types of media. The project will involve various practices, productions, and processes, aiming to answer the question: "How do we design the learning environment?". The project will focus on 1) researching learning styles, 2) creating and utilizing learning materials, and 3) evaluating learning materials. Each learner selects their own research topic, including foreign language learning, design, environment, history, and culture. Some of the works produced in the workshop project include a vocabulary search program that utilizes the German-English database, German learning materials that incorporate video data, a pronunciation exercise program that enables simultaneous voice and facial muscle movements on the web and on the iPhone, a history simulation game for secondary schools, a web-based math learning program for secondary schools, a children's law textbook targeting primary schools, the tea ceremony as a form of lifelong learning, and the development of digital teaching materials for it, etc.

    Designing for value-based healthcare delivery

    In the world of data science, it requires the ability to grasp the process of data generation accurately and at the same time imagine its depths, as well as a high sense of ethics. All kinds of data such as weather, finance, transportation, logistics, and various sensors in our daily lives are connected to human activities. Each individual's "brain and body state." However, because those who handle the data do not have the proper medical knowledge and accurate understanding of the background of the data generation or the destination of the data, i.e., the human "brain and body state," the solutions derived are not directly related to the human activity itself, especially in the field of health care. In particular, in health care, almost nothing has been reflected in clinical practice.
    The research group consists of a wide variety of projects, including the development of pioneering diagnostic and treatment support technologies, the design of healthcare systems that integrate into daily life, the creation of financial theories and insurance systems for the next generation, the prototyping of applications for daily use, and the detection of abnormalities through the distribution of information among systems. In addition, they will be directly involved in technology and system development from mathematical models, data analysis and correct interpretation, data structure design, business model planning, and advanced intellectual property strategy. This research is directly related to human life, so we must take it seriously.
    Through this project, I would like people to realize that every aspect of our daily lives is tied to the "state" of the human body, which is a generic term for changes at the cellular level. This life constitutes the family, society, and country. In other words, I want them to develop the ability to look at the world from a bird's eye view, imagine and design systems from multiple dimensions, discuss what the next-generation healthcare system should be, and think about a sustainable eco-system that transcends generations. We will discuss what the next generation healthcare system should be and aim to acquire the ability to create a sustainable eco-system and create a cyclical business model. You will surely acquire a foundation of approach and thinking that will be useful for your future.
    This seminar will be conducted in conjunction with the practical course "Entrepreneurship and Management," so it is recommended that students take both courses as a set.

    Green infrastructure

    This seminar concentrates on ecosystem-based infrastructure. Students attend a project team and read some books and articles about ecosystem-based infrastructure. The United States Environmental Protection Agency defines green infrastructure as a cost-effective, resilient approach to managing wet weather impacts that provide many community benefits. Also, it states that while single-purpose gray stormwater infrastructure―conventional piped drainage and water treatment systems―is designed to move urban stormwater away from the built environment, green infrastructure reduces and treats stormwater at its source while delivering environmental, social, and economic benefits. On the other hand, Natural England defines it as a strategically planned and delivered network comprising the broadest range of high-quality green spaces and other environmental features. It should be designed and managed as a multifunctional resource capable of delivering those ecological services and quality of life benefits required by the communities it serves and needed to underpin sustainability. In short, green infrastructure is basic social systems and facilities supplied by natural resources or approaches, making the best use of them. Science Council of Japan announced a proposal about ecosystem-based infrastructure in September 2014. It means green infrastructure based on ecosystem. In the seminar, students see what green infrastructure is through books or articles and practice through projects. There are some special talks.

    Research topic include Visual media, UAV(Drone), VR/AR/XR, Web technologies and application of advanced technologies.

    Visual Media
    Goal: application of visual media in various field and develop new methods of visual representations.
    Topic: analysis of visual representation and methods, visual media with new technologies and marketing with visual contents etc.

    UAV(Drone)Development and Application
    Goal: Conduct research on control over physical devices by developing racing drone, drone flight test, flight characteristics analysis, operation practice, software development for flight controller/ESC/OSD etc., attending competition such as FPV drone racing or FPV freestyle, video processing with low latency, development automated flight system and flight support system.

    VR/AR/XR
    Goal: Develop applications of VR
    Topic: Utilization of VR chat to education, integration of VR to UAV, integration of VR to the Web.

    Web Application
    Goal: This group conduct research on advanced web application and related technologies.
    Topic: web marketing, web design, data analysis, Web UI/UX, disaster information system, advanced web application (e.g. SFC Hack)

    Students who join the seminar for the first time are given new student assignments. By completing the assignments those new students are allowed to enroll actual research projects. Completion of the assignments is mandatory to continue enrolling this seminar after 2nd semester.
    Assignments for visual media, VR/AR/XR and Web application are creation of some content.
    Students in UAV Development would be required to pass official examination for Amateur Fourth-Class Radio Operator and basic operation of UAV.
