    Meteorology

There are local winds in many places in Japan, which is produced mainly by steep topography. Local people recognize that the local winds play an important role in determining daily weather. In particular, local winds sometimes cause precipitation. While the major cause of local winds is topography, it is also recognized that topography of island affects wind speed and direction. But it is not fully clear how the local topography of island affects local winds. Hence, in this project, we will explore local winds at Yakushima where the annual precipitation is maximum in Japan by measuring meteorological quantities such as wind and temperature at multiple locations. Particularly, we will examine spatial relationship of wind and discuss causal relationship of precipitation in association with winds by analyzing observed data.

Seminar for the Study of Environmental Problems

SFC announced its carbon neutrality target for 2030 in November 2022 and joined the Renewable Energy University League at the same time SFC aims to further build up energy conservation and energy creation, as well as decarbonisation, resource recycling, biodiversity and synergies with local industry and people's lives. While working to achieve this, the SFC will examine the feasibility of carbon neutrality in cooperation with the local community.
SFC Sustainable Campus Project was launched in May this year to develop projects in the areas of decarbonisation, resource recycling, natural environment, health and community, and food and agriculture in collaboration with each other.
As an initiative that is particularly likely to generate synergies, farm-based solar power generation, which combines agriculture and solar power generation projects, has attracted attention and is spreading worldwide. This project aims to analyse the benefits and challenges of placing agriphotovoltaic power generation inside and outside SFC, and to demonstrate the effects that can be explained externally using the project evaluation method used in the field of green finance (impact evaluation). A presentation to the environmental section of Fujisawa City is planned as the final output of the results.

Research on Methodology for Creating Pattern Languages

In this special research project, we aim to deepen our understanding of the process of creating a pattern language that has been developed and refined in the Iba Lab. Through discussions, we seek to connect this understanding to future practical applications. The professor responsible for this course will provide comprehensive materials on the creation of pattern languages. You are expected to read themselves in advance, examining them in relation to their own experiences and gaining a clear image of how they can be applied in practice. When the members gather, they will engage in conversations about their own experiences and thoughts, ask questions about any uncertainties or areas they want to explore further, and discuss any aspects that need to be further clarified as a method.

    Data Architecture and Trust

The Internet has become an indispensable part of social and economic activities. With the spread of smartphones and social networking services that utilize the Internet, individuals and organizations can now transmit and view data to the world anytime and anywhere. Some of this data may be false information, and this has actually caused social problems. Even if there is such a suspicion about data on the Internet, it is often impossible to confirm the certainty (degree of correctness) of the data. In such a situation, the viewer is forced to make his or her own judgment of the certainty of the data, and the decision-making based on these data may not be accurate.

The Trusted Internet Architecture Lab at the SFC Research Institute, in collaboration with Fujitsu Limited, is discussing ways to realize a "Trustable Internet" that can address the above issues. In this special research project, we will review the technologies for building trust in the Internet, and conduct a hands-on session with prototypes implemented in the lab, as well as a hackathon to study use cases and develop prototypes.

Creating music / art piece using AI

Research on deep learning-based autoregressive and generative models has made remarkable progress in recent years. Moreover, it is being applied not only by researchers but also by artists, musicians, and performers in creative manners. After a hands-on lecture, students will work in groups to create their artworks/music in this seminar.

By using cross-modal AI models, such as the CLIP model, we'll prototype installation pieces for the coming exhibition of Tokui Lab at InterCommunication Center.

    Introduction to Korean Studies 4

This special research project is an introductory subject to Korean Studies. Needless to say, it is essential to understand Korean from the perspective of regional research to study South Korea and its extended areas. On the other hand, learning Korean may further develop into the study of the language itself, that is, the study of Korean. In this project, for those who have taken Korean language, we will specifically learn the pattern of developing Korean language into (1) area studies and (2) the pattern of developing it as research on the language itself.
Although the full-time faculty members of the Korean language laboratory have different research fields, we will explain how they face Korean and conduct daily research as a research tool and as a research target, with episodes. A mini-lecture by graduate students (master's and doctoral) is also planned.
Lectures by guests invited from outside include (1) graduates who learned Korean at SFC as beginners and are still active in society using Korean, and (2) former full-time teachers who were in charge of Korean language education at SFC. (3) Researchers who practice language and regional studies have been on the stage so far. In this project, we will watch some interesting Korean movies and deepen our understanding of Korea in recent years through movies.
Students will carry out group work when their intellectual curiosity about Korean society has increased. Students who have similar interests will form a group, conduct research activities, and then give a group presentation. After having a discussion with all participants, prepare and submit a personal research report.
Through a series of work, it is our hope that students will be able to rediscover the significance and goals of learning Korean and discover each "way" that will lead to further research activities.

    Research Seminar Theme

In August 2019, in conjunction with the establishment of the Laboratory for Learning and Education in the Age of Society 5.0 (President: Kan Hiroshi Suzuki) at the SFC Research Institute, we will be focusing on "co-education to nurture people who create a new world" in addition to the traditional theme of "fostering social producers who graduate from the modern age to create a new world. In August 2019, in conjunction with the establishment of the Social 5.0 Era Learning and Education Laboratory (President: Kan Hiroshi Suzuki) at the SFC Research Institute, we have added to the objectives of the research group the study of "co-education to nurture people who will create a new world" in addition to the conventional "nurturing of social producers who will graduate from modernity and create a new world," and the actual conception, planning, and realization of co-education projects.

Then, in the spring of 2020, as part of a project to make Hagi City in Yamaguchi Prefecture more attractive to the local community, we began to support high school students in their exploratory studies. Specifically, in collaboration with the city's Board of Education and school teachers, we are running inquiry courses for high school students in Hagi and Mitoyo. Through these activities, we are in the process of creating a model case of creating new learning together with the local community and schools in order to nurture the "creative power" of students, who are the leaders of the future. In addition, there are plans to collaborate with the Niseko City Board of Education in Hokkaido.

As we move forward in the midst of such a period of change, we are now conducting a special research project in Hokkaido, with the aim of pursuing, practicing, and collaborating on further possibilities for inquiry-based learning with the local community.

    Our Project Case Study
In collaboration with the city of Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, we are making proposals for realizing inquiry-based learning in the local community and conducting actual courses. The goal is to build a model for creating new learning together with the community and schools. In addition to deepening and developing the program for high school students in Hagi City, we are planning to collaborate with the Niseko City Board of Education.

Support for the informatization of education: Elementary and junior high schools across Japan are working hard to realize the GIGA school concept promoted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and to overcome the effects of COVID 19. We are building a model to support such educational sites. We plan to collaborate with the Shibuya Ward Board of Education and others.

In addition to deepening our understanding of the latest trends in education and co-education, including the new Courses of Study and OECD Education 2030, we will discuss various issues related to education and co-education, and share our sense of real issues with players active in the field of education and co-education.

Marine resources -> Support a start-up business (Shichiken Suisan) launched by seminar students to support the sustainability of the fishing industry. Support a start-up business (Shichiken Suisan) started by a seminar student to support the sustainability of the fishery industry. There is a possibility of working with NGOs to protect endangered fish species.

Support for the Shibuya Startup Deck → Creating an art and creative start-up ecosystem in Shibuya, promoted by Shibuya Ward.

Participation in the Toyooka Theater Festival: In order to explore new possibilities for performing arts, we will present our new style of performing arts at the Toyooka Theater Festival to be held in September 2021. Collaboration with the University of Tokyo's Gakugei Feito Seminar.
