Design is undergoing a revolution. Technology is empowering more people to create and disseminate designs, and professionals and enthusiasts are using it to share their work with the world. Open design is changing everything from furniture to how designers make a living.
"Open design" was defined as design whose makers allowed its free distribution and documentation and permitted modifications and derivations of it. More than a decade later, open design with Digital Fabrication (3D Printing, Laser cutting, so on) is developing actively and constitutes an influential trend in the world of design.
I'll give you a lecture series of how open design has been working in the circumstances of COVID-19. And I'll give you a basic exercise of 3D-Modelling (Tinkercad, fusion360, OpenScad, blender) to create 3D-printed face-shield/face-mask.
The idea of "open design" was born around 2010, as 3D printers and digital fabrication tools became popular and various design files were uploaded and shared on the Internet.
It is a new democratized design culture in which designers are not the authority and monopolist as in the past, but rather everyone is encouraged to "share" their design ideas.
More than a decade later, data for 3D printers is now in daily shared.
And we have learned through practice that the "open design" approach is socially very effective in the production of assistive technology for the handicapped people, where conventional standarized design products could not reach, and in emergency manufacturing during disasters such as the Covid-19.
In this class, while learning about this history and backgrounds, students will learn through practice about a new trend called "open source urbanism" as a direction toward which "open design" will move in the next decade Specifically, students will create "inclusive benches" over the course of the fall semester, learning important concepts such as measurement and reproduction of existing benches, parametric design, the concept of inclusivity, and the arrangement and conversion of benches. Each week, you will be given a production assignment, so you will update your design proposal a total of five times. In the process, we will also have discussions with other students in the class about what is truly "inclusive" in the city.
This class is intended for students who are already able to create 3D data using 3D-CAD (fusion 360, Blender, Rhino, etc). Only those who have basic 3D skills in product design, architectural design, furniture design, etc. and have no problem communicating in English should take this class.
In addition, as a textbook for learning open design,
Open Design Now | Why design cannot remain exclusive" http://opendesignnow.org/index.html
was published in the Netherlands in 2011, and I supervised its Japanese edition. https://opendesignnow.jp/
I hope you will have read through the contents of this book before class.

Literature review of strategic management. Participants were to pre-read the papers and participate the in-class discussion. The instructor introduces a list of first-class academic papers in the field of management, and the students to review them before the class. The class discussion is dedicated to analysing the paper's structure and contents, as well as the contributions and implications. By the end of the course, the students are expected to develop an overview of the literature around strategic management.
Social Innovation & Entreprenurship
This is an advanced practical environmental design studio for graduate students who have a significant educational background in the field and who have decided to specialize in architecture, landscape design, urban design and city planning. The course is built around an international and multi-disciplinary perspective and offers broad training in practical problem solving at various scales in the built environment.
Students are asked to use design problems as the vehicle for creation of concrete proposals in architectural design, landscape design, urban design, and city planning, and to explore real and contextual issues of the urban environment at an advanced level.
A chief goal of the class is for students to come to understand the multi-layered and intertwined structure of the urban environment through the design process, and to develop the tools needed to design persuasive and comprehensive proposals in the urban context. Students who achieve high standing in all four applied environmental design studios will qualify to complete the master's degree though a non-master's thesis course.
In this increasingly diverse world, there is a clear need for advanced communicative competence. In this project, we will explore the mechanism of second language acquisition and foreign language teaching through a mixed-methods, qualitative and quantitative approach with the aim of utilized-focused
language learning and research. In particular, we will focus on language learning in relation to various cultural perspectives, including cognitive linguistics and pragmatics as they pertain to living in and creating a multilingual and multicultural society.

A large part of the world which we live in is constructed via language-based cognition. What is the relation between mind and language? How does this relation mature through cognitive development and change over years? We will try to answer these questions through an interdisciplinary approach combining language acquisition/teaching research, linguistic typology, and cognitive science.
With the enactment of Paris Agreement and the UN SDGs both in 2015, human society is advancing toward a new paradigm that overcome the negative impact of industrialization and find a new way to motor economic growth. It is full of uncertainty and risks without established solutions with conventional social and economic systems. This course is designated to share advanced ideas and technologies to tackle global risks toward resilient and sustainable society through innovations of technology, business models, policy and regulation.
Focusing on the aspects of perception and sensation in the black box of the human mind will provide important insights not only in daily life but also in performance under severe spatiotemporal constraints such as sports. In this academic project, we will discuss the research theme of each student from various disciplines related to perception in psychology, furthermore, we will not only summarize it as a master's thesis but also develop young researchers who can cultivate new disciplines.
The importance of psychological support to those who have vulnerability of personality and various trauma, who are suffering from mental and physical disorders is increasing more and more. It is demanded to develop human resources capable of psychological support with a multilateral perspective. Therefore, in this project, as a mental health expert, it aims to nurture the ability to perform activities such as observation, assessment and consultation necessary for clinical psychology.
