The focus for this course is the expanded contextual relationship of the arts to society, politics, culture and history, with a special emphasis on environmentalism and human rights. Supported by reference to Post War art & culture and through seminars and workshops, students study concepts relating to relevant creative expression and use this knowledge to present projects about art & context during the semester, concentrating on Artists Tackling Global Issues. In addition to the development of critical thinking skills, students develop the following English language skills: listening and note taking, reading, writing, seminar participation, discussion, debate and presentation. The course is best suited to students who are comfortable taking instruction and participating in class in English. Students who are interested in Architecture, Design, Urban Planning, and Media will especially benefit from this course.
The goal of this course is to enhance the English language abilities and leadership qualities of the students. It will introduce them to various discussion formats, challenging their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. In the concluding weeks, the students will showcase their learning by organizing and conducting discussions on topics of their preference, assessed through regular class participation, homework assignments, and peer assessment.

How to Successfully Bring a Product or Service to Market Using Online Marketing
***Please note that eight classes will be held live on campus, and six classes will be held live on Zoom. You must attend and be able to participate in real-time in both formats, not by a class recording or on-demand.***
In this class, you will learn and apply marketing strategies to create two online marketing presentations
1. A YouTube Marketing Consulting project
2. A Marketing AI project
You will learn and apply the following: market research, YouTube analytics, salesmanship and copywriting, Internet ad creation, YouTube video creation, and marketing AI.
The course will use active learning in every class (discussion and group work).
Each week, a short lecture will be followed by a hands-on activity to put the information learned into action. Some activities will be done individually, but several activities will be group-based. Homework will be given every week, including several discussions and presentations.
By the end of the class, you will have learned about several areas of online marketing and improved your presentation skills in different formats.

An Introduction to India
The course will help students understand the ideas connected to modern India on key themes and develop analytical and presentation skills. Students will study the making of India and its diverse politics, cultures, ideas and traditions. The course will be based on group discussions in class and end-semester project presentation. The presentation theme will be decided in class based on discussion with the instructor.
The course is firmly based on the idea that language is a powerful reflection of cultural values, and therefore uses translation as a means to explore the workings and characteristics of our own language as well as those of English. Making use of subtitled/dubbed movies and TV shows as material, we will mainly work on Japanese to English translations. In every class, we will challenge ourselves with the task of creating our own "sub-channel" scripts or subtitles. It is an activity-based course in which students are expected to learn from practical experience and experimentation. Creativity, imagination, and humor will be highly appreciated. We will also be working towards a common goal- producing a dubbed ("fukikae") English version of a segment from a Japanese video of your choice in groups. In the beginning of the course we will work on English-language videos translating the subtitles or dubbed versions and "re-creating" the English scripts. After writing Japanese dub scripts for English videos for a few weeks, we finally move on to using Japanese materials to create the English versions.
In class, we will use short video segments and work on the translation in pairs or small groups. Class activities will basically follow the same procedure every week:
1. Watching the video segment
2. Translating and discussing in pairs or groups
3. Presenting the script and sharing each other's work
4. Comparing our versions with the original version
5. Discussing the work and material

This class is suitable for students who enjoy reading and feel challenged to analyze the stories, and use imagination to write further to develop the stories. The selection chosen for this class are taken from the work of famous writers with diverse cultural and ethnic background, and protagonists with variety of moods, styles, subjects, and themes. Students will read short fictions ranging from 500 to 3,000 words that are appropriate in content and vocabulary, engaging and relatively easy to comprehend.
In this class, you will read some famous Japanese poets from the Meiji through roughly the early Shōwa era. Most of the reading will be in Japanese. You will improve your English writing and translation skills by translating poems into English. You will also write your own original English poems! We will look at haiku, tanka, and more modern styles of poetry. Every week we will have discussion activities. You will work with classmates to translate and write poems. There will also be some "Poetry Projects" where you will read your translated and original poems to your classmates and give each other feedback. As part of these projects, you will submit your poems in English and receive feedback from the teacher.
In this class you will listen to a variety of materials (podcasts, music, fiction/nonfiction, etc.) and answer moderately challenging questions about them. You will work at your own pace. We shall read news articles on a wide range of world affairs. The course aims to develop students' (i) reading skills, (ii) vocabulary and (iii) understanding of the issues our world is facing. We start with articles from The Economist and later more liberty will be given to text selection. When reading a text, not just Japanese translation but other approaches, e.g. paragraph summary, logical analysis, and English paraphrase, will also be adopted.
The goal of this class is to enable students to explain modern Japanese culture in their own words. This semester, we will particularly focus on the seasonal events and customs that give life in Japan a yearly rhythm. Students will learn to explain these in English and give presentations both in groups and alone.
