The course aims to introduce students to basic concepts of semantics and methods for practical analysis of linguistic data. We will put particular focus on the analysis of lexical meaning from a cognitive linguistic perspective. What is the mechanism behind our understanding of lexical meaning? How are our concepts structured via metaphors other conceptual operations? What might we be able to learn from the analysis of culturally significant lexical items? These are basic research questions of this course.
