
This course aims to develop students’ listening ability and students’ recognition, understanding and use of the parts of speech in English. Students will listen to contemporary rock and pop songs at natural speed in order to get accustomed to phonological changes in, rhythms, pitch and intonation of English as it appears in songs. Students will also learn abbreviations, phrases, and expressions typically found in English song culture. The ultimate goal of this course is to develop students’ listening ability so that they can grasp listening for specific information.
Throughout this Grammar through Rock and Pop Music course, students will be exposed to and given practice with the parts of speech in English through cloze activities based on some of the biggest selling rock or pop music. Over the final weeks of the course, student-generated material will be utilized in class.
This course involves pair-work and small group group-work to complete tasks, exercises, and activities, and vocabulary related to rock and pop music and genres will also be looked at throughout the course.
