Course Summary

This Kenkyukai (seminar) focuses on people and communities. We integrate various social science approaches, and conducts research to solve problems surrounding healthcare. In this Kenkyukai "Theory and Research in Health Communication," you will learn about "health communication," which is the theory and practices of communication to enhance health and wellbeing of individuals and communities.

Communication as a means of helping people live healthier lives has been developing dynamically, incorporating new media and methods in response to social demands in each country. For example, many people today with serious health challenges often have multiple social, economic, and environmental challenges. In order to solve such health issues, it is not enough to simply convey the correct knowledge and/or evidence to the person concerned, but it is also necessary to encourage the people around the person concerned, and even develop policies to change the social environment. It is also necessary to emphasize the importance of the issue to stakeholders such as those in charge.

In the seminar, students will learn the basic theories and concepts for effective health and medical communication, as well as how to turn practice into research, along with practical examples. We also plan to have external instructors who are practicing outstanding health communication in society. We welcome those who are interested in medicine, public health, and health/medical policy, and who are willing to learn strategies, skills, methods, and approaches to understanding and collaborating with diverse actors to solve human health problems.

In our Kenkyukai, students will play leading roles in planning and facilitating each session. Students will be required to read materials and prepare for the discussion. Foreign students are welcome but need to have basic Japanese communication skills. We use a textbook written in Japanese but for those who need some assistance, the professor will introduce relevant reading materials written in English.
