Course Summary

In the "Intercultural Communication - A Critical Perspective" seminar, we delve into the complexities surrounding culture, ethnicity/nationality/race, language, gender, class, and identity in intercultural communication. Culture is not a fixed entity, but rather one that is shaped by various groups and their respective power dynamics. This means that our intercultural interactions are often influenced by invisible and taken-for-granted aspects of power. Therefore, it is crucial to gain a critical understanding of these power dynamics. Then, we can address imbalanced power relations and empower us to creatively seek alternative possibilities beyond the status quo.
We will explore the issues through reading and discussing books/videos/articles. Students will also conduct a project/ research on related topics by themselves or with other members of the seminar.
