Policy issues at urban management.
This course involves the way to acquire meaningful data from the real world as a tool of problem finding and solving. The data source ranges from the space, e.g. environment monitoring, objects around us, which play critical role cyber physical systems, to human as the stakeholder of a problem. Different data sources require different ways to extract data from them, and the correct way must be used to acquire meaningful data. This course overviews social surveys using questionnaire technique, environment monitoring using state-of-art sensing technologies, and data analysis/presentation skills that are common to all the different projects.
This course focuses on Japanese local and prefectural government. Japanese language is used for this course, including reading assignments. Institutional and fiscal Problems in Japanese local government,, Decentralization, Acceptance of New Public Management and Public-Private Partnership in Japanese local government, Policy innovation, Citizen participation, and Crisis management will be the topics of this course, but there may be some changes for emerging important topics, depending on the students' interest. Lecture of basic knowledge and reading assignment for this topic are combined in every topic.
"Fieldwork" is a type of qualitative research methods that aims to understand our society and culture. In addition to its practical meaning as a research "technique," it is also important to think about (1) one's "standpoint" in identifying and defining one's own "problems/issues," and about (2) one's "communicative competence" in interpreting the findings and to make the results available to the public.
This class provides the knowledge and the methodology of the qualitative research, where you will understand the basic process of the social research through the actual small-scale qualitative survey. It is more important to understand how to see things happening in our society than to understand the technique.
The main objective of this course is to exercise development of web applications based on a framework Ruby on Rails where we use a script programming language Ruby which is becoming popular recently. First, we will learn the language specification and programming techniques of Ruby. Next, we will learn how to use Ruby on Rails, and then make our own practical applications.

This course explains the feature and current business model of ICT industry from the global perspective which is transforming its shape very rapidly reflecting technological progress such as 5G, IoT, big data and AI in addition to digitization since 1990s. This course also summarizes competitive and cooperative relationship simultaneously occurred between traditional network providers (telecommunications)/media (e.g. newspaper and television) and platformers (e.g. GAFA) from the perspective of economics and introduce present status and regulatory discussion concerning media converged services. Furthermore, we analyzes the importance of “media localism” based on the economics of information and consider the role of ICT including media localism to solve social issues in the era of aging population.

In this lesson, rather than uniquely observing what has already been designed, you can think about how to relate to the observation object, create your own way of observation by themselves, and use materials to convey the obtained findings to others We aim to acquire skills to create / draw with improvisation. Through practical exercises, we deepen our understanding of the relationships and structures that lurk in the process of "design", rethink the location of various problems of modern technology and design, how to think about ideas, how to engage with society.
Design of public space due to undergrounding of expressway in Nihonbashi
The target site will be the Nihonbashi River in and around in Chuo-ku, Tokyo.
Redevelopment projects are planned in more than 6 districts around the Nihonbashi River, and many new super high-rise buildings specialized for business are planned to be constructed, and along with this, a plan for undergrounding the Metropolitan Expressway is progressing.
As the Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway is underground and the Nihonbashi River is opened, it is required to enhance the public space for business people working in the district or local residents. Consideration of the public space on the waterfront Is in a hurry. Therefore, in this studio, the landscape and architectural forms will be designed for the purpose of public offering along the river, including future utilization of the current Shuto Expressway.
What kind of network, boundary, program, and form can a public space take into account how the river and its riverside space should be, the construction of unnecessary highways, and cooperation with the surrounding redevelopment plan? , We will conduct an online fieldwork-based survey and propose landscape and architectural designs.
This studio aims to teach the basic architectural designing process dealing with the so-called architectural masterpieces of modern architecture. Firstly, students will make an analysis of a masterpiece house and secondly, they will be designing a house using the analysis result in an actual site.
