Economy and labor market of Japan have a lot of problems such as lower productivity than other advanced countries, long working hours, and inadequate diversity in management level. In this context, the objectives of this course are to gain deep understandings on current situation of the Japanese society and challenges and future directions on labor policy, especially on Work Style Reform which the National Government of Japan is tackling.
This course surveys approaches to second language (L2) learning and factors that influence its rate (and possible route) such as cross-linguistic influence, age and individual differences. Students will discover how humans learn language(s) after they acquire their first language (L1). Students are expected to actively participate in discussions as well as taking turns in leading the discussion on various topics covered in class.
Japanese music, like Japanese culture, is often thought to be monolithic, but in fact there is and always has been great musical diversity within Japan. This course will give a basic overview of major folk, popular, and art genres currently performed in Japan and their historical relationships to one another and to the rest of the world's music. This course will include interactive components including workshops by guest performers. Students will also undertake research projects focused on a musical performance and present brief in-class presentations during the final weeks of class.
In this course we will watch videos (documentaries and news) about different social initiatives taking place across the Spanish-speaking world.
The Nikkei Communities in Latin America and Japan
In this course we will explore the Nikkei communities in Latin America from a historical and cultural perspective. Students will analyze the historical background of the Japanese migration to Latin America, the settlement and community development. The analysis of the historical processes will enable the students to understand the contemporary features of Nikkei communities in different Latin American societies. In the second part of the course, we will examine the so-called “return migration” to Japan. This analysis aims to understand these ethnic minorities, whose temporary migration has gradually turned into a permanent stay.
Along the course we aim to consider the main causes and effects of migration, the cultural characteristics of the migrants and their families, and the effects of their settlement on their children education. Additionally, we will discuss the migrants’ identity and the maintenance (or non) of their heritage language.
Service infrastructure for collecting data via networks and constructing computing resources such as IoT and big data is rapidly spreading. This is a service form that has further evolved the infrastructure in which networking and computing have been integrated recently called cloud and is realized by combining software components present on the network and computational resources virtualized by software ing.
Therefore, in this lecture we will review the basics of conventional network technology and computing technology, and acquire elemental technologies of infrastructure built across both fields based on that knowledge. Specifically, we learn the concepts of virtualization technology used both in networking and computing, and the concept of API called via network, and design theory and technology to realize optimum design in building services Learn about choice through practical training. Since it is a lecture including practical training, it is a prerequisite that you have acquired basic knowledge of computer use and basic knowledge on network and OS.
Through this lecture, we aim to develop human resources capable of responding to the construction of service infrastructure of the future and utilizing it as a weapon for the goal to achieve ICT technology.
ICT has become an essential part of daily life. However, there are almost no ICT services connected to health and medical care, which we are not aware of daily.
In this course, we will look at health and medical care as an extension of daily life and redesign the healthcare system as new social infrastructure, evolving from the conventional concept of the insurance system.
The course also explores businesses that constitute the new social infrastructure, their strategies as management scenarios, and how the excellent entrepreneurs should be to implement them.
Students will be provided with a case of a business performing in a competitive environment. The class will be conducted in a case method fashion, stimulating discussion among students on a given subject.
Touch Lab 1: Touch Fab
The main objective of this lab is to facilitate digital fabrication concerning body perception (haptics and tactile feelings). Combining the basic level of engineering, behavioral science, and psychological study, we implement haptic technology in real life in multiple contexts. We welcome fieldwork study including workshop facilitation on social implementations of haptic technology.
Touch Lab 2: Touch Science
The objective of this research lab is to analyze haptic phenomena in daily life.
In 2020, we have learned basic statistics and multivariate analysis. Based on this background, we would like to conduct research projects on a group basis. Senior students are supposed to lead a project, and junior students would support the research project (but junior students can add some of the research items in the main project).
Touch Lab 1: Touch Fab: Deep Shitsukan study and expression
The main objective of this lab is to prototype haptic representations using multi-modalities (vision, touch, sound, smell, and taste) using digital fabrication technologies. By combining the basic level of engineering, behavioral science, and psychological study, we implement haptic technology in real life in multiple contexts.
This seminar requires lab members to study the assignments that we decided on.
Touch Lab 1 focuses on fabrication, and Touch Lab 2 mainly focuses on scientific research using sensing technology. These labs are not exclusive so that students who want to take both labs are welcome.
Touch Lab 2: Touch Science
The objective of this research lab is to analyze haptic phenomena in scientific methods.
In the 2021 Spring semester, we have learned basic statistics, conducted literature reading, and research design practices. Based on this background, we would like to conduct research projects on a group basis. Senior students are supposed to lead a project, and junior students would support the research project (but junior students can add some of the research items in the main project).
TOUCH LAB 1 (TOUCH FAB) focuses on how you express haptic feelings using multiple media, and TOUCH LAB 2 (TOUCH SCIENCE) focuses on physical measurements and their corresponding sensory evaluation.
The anticipation of new possibilities and hopes that campus life has to offer enthralls university students in their new environment each year. However, many students experience indisposition, such as difficulty getting along with new friends and academic relationships, disorderly dietary and sleeping habits or apathy following a loss of purpose, during the process of adjusting to their new cultural environment. Additionally, the student’s burden includes items that induce disruptive conditions, such as extended periods of computer operation, group work lasting late into nights, peer pressure at parties and midterm and final requirements. In addition, support from the student’s family may not be as readily available, leaving the student more vulnerable to the stress of adjustment. The student must assume responsibility for managing his/her life habits and maintaining his/her own health. Physical and Mental Health for Campus Life will consist of seven sessions aimed at acquiring basic skills and theory in order to maintain physical and mental soundness that will ensure a fulfilling campus life. Although the student may be familiar with much of the lecture material, the important aspect is that the theory be applied practically.
To this end, through the topics discussed during sessions, students are expected to re-evaluate their health conditions or problems and recapture these health issues from a personal perspective.
Physical and Mental Health for Campus Life is a prerequisite for second year advancement. Freshmen are strongly recommended to enroll during their first semester. Through lecture and group work, this course aims to provide fundamental knowledge for a healthy and productive campus life and further prepare the student to be a self-managing and self-sufficient leader of society after graduation. In Fall semester, there is also Physical and Mental Health for Campus Life in English. This course is for GIGA program students and international students, and special emphasis is placed on Intercultural adaptation issues. Students who are not accustomed to Japanese culture are strongly recommended to take English course.
