Biology has transformed into a data-driven science, due to the advent of numerous high-throughput measurement technologies. Central to these innovations is the genetic information. One of the core properties of living systems is the existence of genetic information, and analysis of this information, is the central challenge of bioinformatics. Moreover, analysis of genes and genomes through bioinformatics is basically an informatics problem. In this course, major software tools and algorithms for searching, comparison, assembly, variation detection, quantification of genetic sequences would be covered, with hands-on workshops, to understand the basics of genome and bioinformatic analyses.

The purpose of this course is to teach the skills and concepts necessary for creating documents through practice. The course focuses on document creation as a step in "information production" and covers many methodologies, especially those related to structuring and communicating information. In structuring information, we will focus on requirements analysis and outlining to discover what needs to be written and to formulate it into a document. In terms of communication, we will follow the concept of paragraph writing and aim to learn how to express information to allow the reader to understand what is being communicated efficiently and without misunderstanding. We will also engage in group discussions, peer review (an activity in which students critique each other's documents and give advice to each other), and publishing the learning process online.

This class is intended for students who aim to become specialists in environmental design, focusing on architectural design, urban design, and landscape design, and is positioned as the first course such students should take. The core of SFC's architectural design, urban design, and landscape design is the design practice classes such as "Design Studio". In principle, only students who have already taken "Basic Digital Design" or "Basic Design Studio" are eligible to take the three "Design Studio" advanced courses. Therefore, it is advisable to take this class as early as possible in the school year, as the knowledge and skills acquired in this class will be essential for students to take more specialized environmental design classes in the future. It is also recommended that students who wish to learn digital skills such as architectural 3D modeling, drawing and perspective creation in more detail take "Basics of Architectural Computer-Aided Design(CAD)" at the same time.

    Subject
In this class, we will design a chair using the 3D modeling software "Rhinoceros" and create a chair using digital fabrication machine "Shopbot". The material constraint will be one wood plywood of thickness 9mm, width 910mm, and height 1820mm.

    Objectives
The purpose of this class is the following two points.
    (1) Learn a basic design language.
    (2) To be able to move freely between digital and analog

Efforts to preserve the global environment are one of the greatest challenges of the present age. Thus, it is inevitable to have a considerable involvement in environmental issues, irrespective of the area of specialization. The field of environment is extremely broad. It involves a wide range of stages from the earth to life to human society. For this reason, subjects related to the environment are currently being segmented and specialized.

With this context, this course helps the students to learn specialized knowledge in the field of extremely wide sectors related to environment in order to have a solid foundation of this diverse topic. A comprehensive review of a wide range of environmental fields from a unified viewpoint of science and technology is provided. This helps in deepening knowledge while viewing the entire environmental field, even if the student advances to one specific areas for his/her research or profession. In each lesson, we will take up specific cases, that can easily be understood with view point of science and technology application in the field of envirnmental management.

How do you hone your sense of system (software, device, appliance) design and implementation? Of course, it is necessary to acquire basic creative skills such as programming and fabrication, but in order to make the most of these skills, it is important to have an "eye-for-detecting real things" and an "eye-for-detecting problems" (a kind of appraising eye). This "eye" is cultivated by seeing, touching, disassembling, and tinkering with many real things.

In this lecture, we will analyze various software systems, devices, and appliances in a deconstructive approach. By doing so, we will understand the operating principles of each part (module) from a microscopic perspective, and the operating principles of the product as a composite of these parts from a macroscopic perspective.
