    While companies mostly procure funds through equity financing or bank loans, both methods do not function sufficiently in rural areas in Japan. It is difficult for rural projects to capture investments since many venture capitals invest heavily in Tokyo-based projects, while equity financing does not suit rural companies since many are not large enough to scale nation-wide and go public. As for loans, while startup support loans and loan security systems have been enhanced, regional financial institutions often hesitate to lend working capital in the following expansion stage.

    In this way, opportunities to receive funds, especially high-risk funds, were restricted for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and venture businesses in rural areas, as well as social businesses aiming to resolve regional or social issues. However, recent years have seen the emergence of various social finance methods which serve as new financing sources for resolving social issues, and companies have been procuring funds through crowdfunding, social impact investments, and Hometown Tax Donations among other methods to create new businesses or expand existing ones, thereby playing a role in resolving social and regional issues.

    Meanwhile, much remains unknown about each social finance method, including their effective usage, demanding further research. The following questions are important from both practical and academic aspects: what kind of businesses are compatible with each financing method; and how effective is social finance relative to conventional financing methods in driving regional entrepreneurship and resolving regional issues. Let's discuss these in the classroom.

    This is an advanced practical environmental design studio for graduate students who have a significant educational background in the field and who have decided to specialize in architecture, landscape design, urban design and city planning. The course is built around an international and multi-disciplinary perspective and offers broad training in practical problem solving at various scales in the built environment.
    Students are asked to use design problems as the vehicle for creation of concrete proposals in architectural design, landscape design, urban design, and city planning, and to explore real and contextual issues of the urban environment at an advanced level.
    A chief goal of the class is for students to come to understand the multi-layered and intertwined structure of the urban environment through the design process, and to develop the tools needed to design persuasive and comprehensive proposals in the urban context. Students who achieve high standing in all four applied environmental design studios will qualify to complete the master's degree though a non-master's thesis course.

    In this class, we will focus on structural design (structural planning) rather than structural calculation.
    First of all, the relationship between structural design and architectural design will be outlined.
    And then the characteristics and methodologies of various categorized structural systems will be studied.
    At the same time, students will model various structures using structural analysis software running on Rhinoceros/Grasshopper, and acquire a sense for deciphering the flow of forces by visualizing structural behavior using digital technology.

    In today's world, energy resources are considered to be essential for developing and sustaining economic activities. Also, the importance of energy is judged from a security point of view. Ever since curtailing global warming and preserving an inhabitable environment for our future generations has become an inalienable portion of economic development in recent decades, there has been a rising international debate on how mankind should utilize various sources of energy. Based on broader knowledge of features, advantages or disadvantages, and commercial values of various types of energy and resources, this course will aim to analyze the usage of such resources, and to evaluate the validity of regional and major economies' energy policies, with a perspective of forecasting the future of respective energy portfolios.

    The many tasks that computers perform for us can roughly be broken
    down into five categories:
    * process data
    * name data
    * move data
    * store data
    * manage data

    The operating system regulates access to both data and resources, and
    provides abstractions that make the above tasks straightforward.

    The most critical fact of modern systems is that data and computing and storage resources may be spread across the planet. Computing on such distributed data requires moving data, often replicating it in the process. Decisions about computations, as well as the computations themselves, must be made with an eye to achieving this efficiently and robustly.

    This class addresses the design and creation of multimedia knowledge bases (image, video, music and text knowledge-bases), data mining and semantic associative processing. The most important objective of this lecture is to develop knowledge and skills for designing and creating multimedia knowledge-bases and multimedia systems with experimental practice. It is essential to study how to analyze, store, retrieve and integrate media data (image, video, music and text) in a knowledge-base system environment. An actual knowledge-base system is used to create experimental multimedia knowledge-bases and applied it to WWW system environments. We also design a meta-level multimedia system with data mining processes for new-multimedia creation.

    Recent drastic technological innovation in measurement and analysis of biological system is leading life science to big data science at molecular level. While a lot of questions have been solved and abundance of practical applications have been developed, some classic and fundamental questions are left behind, for example why ATP, what is the initial energy source of biological system, how mitochondria has evolved,etc. We will focus on some biological singularities and seek to understand the path to them.

    生物多様性とは、地球上に存在する生命の多様性を示す概念である。人間活動による影響は生態系の劣化に止まらず、種の絶滅や種内の遺伝的多様性の損失など様々なレベルに及び、世界の生物多様性はこれまでにないスピードで失われつつある。しかし、生物多様性の損失は私たちにとってどのような意味があるのだろうか?本授業では、植物や動物などの生物相に関する研究への理解を深め、土地管理が生物多様性に与える影響、生物多様性と生態系サービスとの関係など、事例研究を幅広く取り上げる。さらに、こうした研究成果が実社会の政策立案にどのように反映されているのかを議論していく。

    老年学とは老化に関する医学、看護学、社会学、心理学などの研究であり、特に医学的分野(=老年医学)は高齢者特有の疾患や病態を理解する上でとても重要です.また、高齢者とは無縁に思えるスポーツ医学は、フレイル予防、介護予防の視点において期待されるものは大きく、昨今の人口のプロポーションを考慮すると、高齢者に対するスポーツ医学の応用はアスリート以上に重要とも言えるでしょう。本講義では老年学やスポーツ医学と老年医学の接点を、それぞれの分野の専門家の講師を迎えオムニバス形式で解説します.これまでの医療に関する知識の有無には関係なく、知識が身に付くよう配慮した講義内容となっているので、医療系の教育を受けた経験がない学生も歓迎します.

    ICT has become an essential part of daily life. However, there are almost no ICT services connected to health and medical care, which we are not aware of daily.
    In this course, we will look at health and medical care as an extension of daily life and redesign the healthcare system as new social infrastructure, evolving from the conventional concept of the insurance system.
    The course also explores businesses that constitute the new social infrastructure, their strategies as management scenarios, and how the excellent entrepreneurs should be to implement them.
    Students will be provided with a case of a business performing in a competitive environment. The class will be conducted in a case method fashion, stimulating discussion among students on a given subject.

    In modern society, the preservation and the formation of natural and social environment to improve our well being are urgent challenges. The improvement of productivity and the revitalization of local community in the society are important challenges as well. In such a situation, the current approach that private profits (profit of person or a particular organization) and public profits are opposed will be a bottleneck. A separate approach to pursue private profits only in business and another separate approach to pursue public profits in administration are insufficient. The total design of private and public profits is required for both social entrepreneur and market mechanism to work with to promote the public profits. In this course, you will learn how to plan a new way of living and to execute through establishing a social business for private profits and sustaining to actualize the public profits. Through the case studies in the various fields, you will discuss how to introduce the incentive system to promote private profits, and how to share the value to achieve the public profits. This course includes lecture, discussion and group work.
