SFC Kotan: Learning the Aynu Language and Aynu Oral Literature

Although Aynu peoples are officially recognised as indigenous peoples of Japan, there are still few academic spaces where students can research on the Aynu language and culture. In this seminar, we learn the Aynu language, realise field visits to Hokkaido, and learn from (and engage in) the efforts to revitalise the language, and delve in to the world of Aynu culture -- centered on kamuy-human relationships -- through their oral narratives. All students participating in this research seminar will learn the language, but their personal research projects can span other topics in humanities and social sciences. We welcome students interested in fieldwork-based social science and humanities, language revitalisation, and literary studies.

The Psychology of Perception and Cognition

This Special Research Project B aims to acquire exceptional mathematical analysis knowledge and practical skills necessary to explore perceptual and cognitive phenomena from a mathematical psychological perspective. Specifically, students will work on computer implementation and numerical computation of mathematical models using differential equations, linear algebra, and probability. We aim to apply the knowledge gained to a deep understanding of perceptual and cognitive phenomena such as space perception, shitsukan perception, self-motion sensation, visual information processing, memory, and decision-making.

How to Realize Social Transformation Based on Collaboration and Sustainable Relationship with Locality in the Field of Education

This is a project working in the field in Kiso Town, Nagano Prefecture. Kiso Town consists of three main areas: Kiso, Hiyoshi, and Kaida. Children living in this area spend most of their time with a group of 10 or so classmates from preschool to junior high school, which limits their opportunities to experience diversity, and many of them have difficulty adjusting to their new environment and often experience hardship when they enter higher education or find employment. Therefore, this project, as part of the Shinshu Community School, is designed to revitalize the local community through "education," and to promote students' understanding of the community in which they live and of themselves, and to provide them with opportunities to become familiar with the diversity of the world and other cultures, while being part of their diverse learning experience. The project is operated with the aim of both promoting understanding of the community in which they live and themselves, and creating opportunities for students to become familiar with diversity and different cultures around the world. In addition, Kiso Town is planning to integrate the currently existing Kiso-cho Junior High School, Hiyoshi Junior High School, and Kaida Junior High School in three years' time, and we expect that this will provide an opportunity for junior high school students to interact with each other. In doing so, they also look to deepen their understanding of the regions in which they live. In order to achieve these goals, the workshop plans to conduct interviews with adults who are working to revitalize the town and make the area more attractive, and to create a "Kiso Town Attractive Person Card" to rediscover the charms of the area.

We will explore this together with Yo Hitoto and Yoichi Kitayama, alumni of this campus who are active in the forefront of music. The goal is to gain a deep understanding of the passion and spirits that continue to create and express music. Other guests will also be invited to learn and think together about career development, sustainable creativity, and the future of music.

    Meteorology

There are many islands in Japan, and due to the fact that they are surrounded by the sea, they are known to have their own localized winds. In addition, the islands in the Sea of Japan, in particular, are closer to the continent than Honshu, etc., so it is known that material transport from the continent is remarkable. Among them, Okinoshima Island, which is located off the coast of Shimane Prefecture, is close to the continent and is in the downstream area of the westerly wind characterized by the jet stream, so pollutants etc. measuring data. Therefore, in this special project, various variables such as wind, air pollutants, and sea salt particles will be measured on Okinoshima Island, which is extremely important for observation, throughout the day. By comparing the data, we will clarify points such as what differences exist between the island and Honshu, how long it takes to transport materials, and how much diffusion they are transported. Specifically, the above questions will be clarified by analyzing the data obtained by observation and the measurement data of the Japan Meteorological Agency at the same time.

This special research project is meant to host an exhibition for four days at Kamakura Gallery located on Kamakura mountain. Students will learn the actual procedures of hosting an exhibition by designing, running, hosting a reception, and getting feedback from visitors.

Recent exhibitions in contemporary art are not limited to enjoying still drawings from the early 20th century. Artists can use multiple media that can dynamically change in time and space. In addition, the change in the exhibition environment can also be included, so that visitors can be a part of the artwork to finalize the experience.
Considering such diverse changes in contemporary art, one clue to consider in the
exhibition is to include the bodily experience of humans. From this standpoint, students
are going to address the question of what the exhibition can provide bodily experience to exhibition visitors. Students will curate exhibition materials, design the space of the exhibition, and execute the exhibition itself including hosting a reception during the period of the exhibition.

    Research Seminar Theme

The Suzukan Seminar has been very successful in fostering many venture entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs, and leaders of new business startups in large organizations under the theme of social production in the information society.

With the establishment of the Learning and Education Laboratory for the Society 5.0 Era (Representative: Hiroshi Suzuki) at the SFC Research Institute in August 2019, in addition to the previous theme of "Fostering Social Producers who Graduate from Modernity and Create a New World," we will be conducting research on the new theme of "Co-education to Foster People who Create a New World" and In addition to the previous theme of "fostering social producers who will graduate from modernity and create a new world," we have added a new theme of "co-education to nurture people who will create a new world" to our research and project objectives.

In the spring of 2020, we began supporting high school students' inquiry-based learning in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Specifically, in cooperation with the city's Board of Education and school teachers, we are running inquiry learning courses for high school students in Hagi. In order to nurture the "creative power" of students, who are the leaders of the future, we are in the process of creating a model case for creating new learning. We are also planning to collaborate with the Niseko City Board of Education in Hokkaido.

Modeling and simulation of biological systems

One of the most important characteristics of life is that it is active and continues to be active. By acting, living systems interact with the environment and maintain their own existence in the environment. In this project, we will use computer simulations to explore the dynamic behavior of living systems and to understand their operating principles.
