    Modern and Contemporary Chinese History

This seminar is based on the study of China from historical and sociological perspectives. We will analyze Chinese issues in modern and contemporary history during the past 100 years, and examine current social problems through the dynamic analysis of grassroots politics and local culture, as well as the daily lives of ordinary people.

Every week we will discuss the literature which students should read in advance. Students are encouraged to present their research plan and give comments to other students’ presentations. Through presentations and discussions, students can learn not only about research perspectives on China studies but also how to conduct independent research. Furthermore, the students will gain the knowledge and skills on how to write an academic paper.

For your information, a sub-seminar will be held in conjunction with Prof. Tajima. The object of the sub-seminar is to read theoretical material on sociology and history.

    Microbial Genomics; Environmental Bioinformatics

“Advanced Biosciences” seminars (Tomita, Naito, Kuroda, Kanai, Soga, Arakawa, Suzuki, Tsujimoto and Hirayama) are operated along with “Systems Biology Project” for graduate students. All members, including faculty members, graduate students, and undergraduate students are involved to research projects.
At the first semester when you join the "Advanced Biosciences" seminars (Kenkyukai), you should take "SEMINAR B (1) Masaru Tomita."
Please check our website for more details. http://www.iab.keio.ac.jp/en

While microorganisms have important roles in various environments (e.g. human body, buildings, sewage, air, soil and plants), they can cause many infectious diseases, which are threats to public health. In this research group, we use bioinformatics and genomics to understand microbial diversity and its medicinal, agricultural and industrial applications.

Our research focuses on reproducible bioinformatics, genome microbiology, and urban microbiomes. It has been estimated that, by 2050, 10 million people will die every year due to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) if no action is taken. Plasmids often carry multiple AMR genes and can be horizontally transferred between microbes, contributing to the spread of AMR in microbial communities. To identify and track antimicrobial resistance genes (resistomes) and mobile genetic elements (e.g., viruses, plasmids, and transposable elements) in urban environments, we have been collecting samples in built environments such as mass-transit systems around the globe (International MetaSUB Consortium, 2021, 2022) and will sample urban environments around the globe before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic and the mass gathering such as international sport events including the World Cup and Olympic & Paralympic Games (http://metasub.org/projects/). We are using a combination of bioinformatics tools for creating global maps of microbiomes and resistomes, inferring host range and transmission routes of mobile genetic elements (e.g., viruses and plasmids), and gaining insight into microbial lifestyles (Suzuki et al., 2017; Yano et al., 2018; Merino et al., 2019; Tokuda et al., 2020).

    Imitation and Originality

This seminar (kenkyu-kai) focuses on the study of Imitation and Originality. Until the Golden age of Classicism, imitation of the traditional canon of classical masterpieces from Greece and Rome was considered an ideal art form. Such paradigm was valued as conducive to producing real literature /real artworks. However, from the end of the 18th century, with the rise of Romantism movement in France, the practice of “imitation” of traditional “chef-d’oeuvre” (masterpieces) gradually lost value. As a result of this ideological reversal, classical “imitation” gradually became regarded as evidence of lack of creativity and genius of artists. Instead, there was a shift of thinking that placed value on “originality and the new.” These became considered to be standard qualities that continue to be valued and emphasized in our time, in both cultural thinking and social practices. In addition, the constant pursuit of “originality and the new” led some artists towards a dimension where they sought to create a paradoxical originality, by using other peoples’ work in the form of citation, parody, plagiarism, collage, homage, ready-made, and others. Therefore, it has become necessary to re-think a definition of what constitutes “imitation and originality” in our time, and how such definition influences practices that are connected to cultural phenomena in modern society.
As a starting point, we are going to read and discuss a series of assigned texts. Participants in this seminar are expected to engage in in-class discussions, respond to assigned readings, select their theme of research, conduct individual research and deliver in-class presentations.

SFC Kotan: Learning the Aynu Language and Aynu Oral Literature

Although Aynu peoples are officially recognised as indigenous peoples of Japan, there are still few academic spaces where students can research on the Aynu language and culture. In this seminar, we learn the Aynu language, realise field visits to Hokkaido, and learn from (and engage in) the efforts to revitalise the language, and delve in to the world of Aynu culture -- centered on kamuy-human relationships -- through their oral narratives. All students participating in this research seminar will learn the language, but their personal research projects can span other topics in humanities and social sciences. We welcome students interested in fieldwork-based social science and humanities, language revitalisation, and literary studies.

Network operation and Real world Internetworking

Internet operation and Internet technology to support real world is the main topic of this seminar.
It's about 20 years since the Internet became a social infrastructure. The Internet changed our lifestyles drastically; now we can communicate with each other, we can acquire information using the Internet and so on.
On the other hand, we aren't satisfied with the current Internet. A few years ago, word "cyberspace" is used. But we are in "real world". The purpose of this seminar is to put real-world information on the Internet to support our life.

Contemporary political and moral philosophy (Theories and Applications)

This research seminar deals with contemporary issues discussed in political and moral philosophy. In general, this branch of philosophy is interested in normative topics, not so much on what “is”, but rather on what “ought to be”. For example, since the times of Ancient Greece, political philosophy has been defined as the quest for the best regime. It addresses the question of what the ideal political regime ought to be. This seminar focuses on normative themes treated by contemporary philosophical theories.

Please note that this seminar is mainly for advanced students who prepare their graduation project 1 and 2, and who undertake individual research projects.

    Health Science

The research group aims to clarify the scientific basis of food and supplements, and to achieve health from the perspective of medical food and the same source. Students will learn through reading in circles, group work, and basic experiments in order to improve their basic knowledge of metabolism, nutrition, and health. Eventually, we would like to expand our activities to social activities in collaboration with various other research group projects working on IT, policy, city planning, etc. Research is not all pleasure, but it also requires persistent mental strength. We welcome those who can find delight in actually working with their hands and creating new concepts, not just knowledge.

    Health Science

This research group aims to develop the results of another research group that focuses on basic research (“Research Group2”, please take a look at it) into social applications. In this research group, we will cooperate with various corporations, local governments, civic organizations, and other research group projects in the field of English education, IT, poThis lab practices regional development of health and welfare through trial and error in the field, aiming for the longevity of individual health and the formation of a healthy community. We promote the practices on a lot of results of another group’s basic research on health science.
Japan is at the forefront of the rapid aging of the world's population, with an estimated 30% of the population over 65 years old by 2030 and over 40% by 2055. As we move toward the world's most super-aged society, how can we build a society where the Japanese people can live happily? This critical situation, in which Japan is the first country in the world to experience a super-aging society, is also an opportunity to create solutions that will change the world.
In the midst of these international issues, the "regional development" is not something that can be completed in a single area, but is made up of a complex and multilayered intertwining of diverse human relationships and issues within a region. At the present on January 2022, we have such research topics below:
    1. Online medical system with Shonan Kei’iku Hospital; organizing basic smartphone lessons and further applied lessons promoting online rehabilitation and telemedicine for the elderly people, making walking courses and building a system for health checkups for participants by a doctor in orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists in charge of online rehabilitation.
    2. Inclusive education in the Kenko Forest; promoting medical research and social systems research, in cooperation with Miura Dolphins and Shinshu University, that create a place where people with disabilities can experience the "excitement of nature" together with their families and friends.
    3. Shonandai art square project; planning and operating programs to make Shonandai a town full of art and music in the basement of Shonandai Station, where a street piano has been installed.
    4. Horse school project; uncovering a history of local horse race in Endo & Goshomi area and creating with horse owners and horse clubs its modern culture which holds leisure experiences of draft horses, caring for horses, etc.
    5. “Wa herb project; learning, collecting, harvesting, processing and using “Wa Herb” which is traditional and native plants in Japan with medical healthy effects but was seldom taken recently as healthy foods.
    6. Gombachi Project; inventing a new high-quality brand of Fujisawa through cropping, harvesting and cooking many kind of agricultural products, and planning a new style of firm stay for rural development.
    7. “Green Lifestyle Business” with Tokyu Fudosan HD; making a new lifestyle in the era of “With COVID-19” as well as global issues like SDGs or Global Warming with the urban users of Tokyu brands which now face challenges of creating innovative and intercultural business in suburban and resort areas in Japan.
    8. Our urban design of “Bloom City”; Combining all topics above and planning and promoting the central works of “Kei’iku Festival” in the wide cooperation over the residents, civil organizations, local industries and global companies, universities, hospitals, municipality in and around Fujisawa city.

A variety of researchers, policy maker, corporate executives and practitioners of regional development in Health Science Lab, SFC Research Institutes, support your researches. One of our professionals is Gouta Miura who is a former Olympic skier, the son of Yuichiro Miura and a researcher on antiaging and Research Topic 2, and is Shonan Kei’iku Hospital which many doctors and specialists in all Japan come and collaboratively study at its laboratory and which creates environment with our lab for policy advocacy to municipality, prefectural and government administration offices.

Students are expected to participate in one or some of the research topic above, or to propose their own original research themes. Students need to discover new concepts that will form the basis of original and effective social action proposals based on research and practice focusing on the propagation of healthy welfare among people, the individual physical and mental health, and the state of a “healthy city”. This lab and the another lab of fundamental research on health science work in tandem and open up an innovative path for regional development of health and welfare. We are sincerely looking forward to the students who are willing to break through conventional common sense and social conventions, to find a way out of difficult times, and to work from Fujisawa toward the realization of a better Japan and world.
licy, and community development to achieve a society where people can live happily.

    Green infrastructure

This seminar concentrates on ecosystem-based infrastructure. Students attend a project team and read some books and articles about ecosystem-based infrastructure. The United States Environmental Protection Agency defines green infrastructure as a cost-effective, resilient approach to managing wet weather impacts that provide many community benefits. Also, it states that while single-purpose gray stormwater infrastructure―conventional piped drainage and water treatment systems―is designed to move urban stormwater away from the built environment, green infrastructure reduces and treats stormwater at its source while delivering environmental, social, and economic benefits. On the other hand, Natural England defines it as a strategically planned and delivered network comprising the broadest range of high-quality green spaces and other environmental features. It should be designed and managed as a multifunctional resource capable of delivering those ecological services and quality of life benefits required by the communities it serves and needed to underpin sustainability. In short, green infrastructure is basic social systems and facilities supplied by natural resources or approaches, making the best use of them. Science Council of Japan announced a proposal about ecosystem-based infrastructure in September 2014. It means green infrastructure based on ecosystem. In the seminar, students see what green infrastructure is through books or articles and practice through projects. There are some special talks.
