    Landscape studies

This seminar concentrates on landscape studies. In Japan, landscape sometimes means only visible features of an area of land, but invisible factors, such as historical background, natural and social environment, and so on, are critical. Students can approach everything related to the landscape. This seminar's keywords are below; ecology, city and rural planning, garden and park, urban green space, civil vitalization, land-use change, environmental education, reconstruction in the disaster field, disaster prevention, and land use plan in a river basin. All students have their own themes. Some students hold a presentation in each class. If you require to join a project, please see the syllabus of the seminar "Green Infrastructure." In this seminar, we will also emphasize discussion of the presentations. In addition, this seminar requires students to read a lot of articles and books.

    Designing for value-based healthcare delivery

In the world of data science, it requires the ability to grasp the process of data generation accurately and at the same time imagine its depths, as well as a high sense of ethics. All kinds of data such as weather, finance, transportation, logistics, and various sensors in our daily lives are connected to human activities. Each individual's "brain and body state." However, because those who handle the data do not have the proper medical knowledge and accurate understanding of the background of the data generation or the destination of the data, i.e., the human "brain and body state," the solutions derived are not directly related to the human activity itself, especially in the field of health care. In particular, in health care, almost nothing has been reflected in clinical practice.
The research group consists of a wide variety of projects, including the development of pioneering diagnostic and treatment support technologies, the design of healthcare systems that integrate into daily life, the creation of financial theories and insurance systems for the next generation, the prototyping of applications for daily use, and the detection of abnormalities through the distribution of information among systems. In addition, they will be directly involved in technology and system development from mathematical models, data analysis and correct interpretation, data structure design, business model planning, and advanced intellectual property strategy. This research is directly related to human life, so we must take it seriously.
Through this project, I would like people to realize that every aspect of our daily lives is tied to the "state" of the human body, which is a generic term for changes at the cellular level. This life constitutes the family, society, and country. In other words, I want them to develop the ability to look at the world from a bird's eye view, imagine and design systems from multiple dimensions, discuss what the next-generation healthcare system should be, and think about a sustainable eco-system that transcends generations. We will discuss what the next generation healthcare system should be and aim to acquire the ability to create a sustainable eco-system and create a cyclical business model. You will surely acquire a foundation of approach and thinking that will be useful for your future.
This seminar will be conducted in conjunction with the practical course "Entrepreneurship and Management," so it is recommended that students take both courses as a set.

    Entrepreneurship and Management

The accelerating change from providing products and services based on mass production and mass consumption to an era that requires an individualized response. In other words, the products and services of the next generation must be in line with the decisions of individuals. In this seminar, we will study the processes and strategies necessary for the creation and operation of businesses that will become the foundation of a new society and the ideal form of entrepreneurs who will implement these processes and strategies, using a variety of cases (examples).

Entrepreneurship is often referred to as "entrepreneurship" these days, but the term "entrepreneur" refers to an "entrepreneur," and the term "ship" refers not to a spirit but to a "way of being. This has been a universal concept since Schumpeter defined creative destruction (innovation) as the essence of capitalism in his book "Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy" published in 1942, and called entrepreneurship the ideal form of the entrepreneur who carries out such innovation.

The purpose of this study group is to develop a keen and rich sensitivity to discriminate between right and wrong, beauty and ugliness, which is essential for entrepreneurship, a prerequisite for future leaders, tolerance to listen to diverse values that differ from one's own, and the ability to take action and produce results by overcoming all kinds of resistance and opposition.

    Research Seminar Theme

The Suzukan Seminar has been very successful in fostering many venture entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs, and leaders of new business startups in large organizations under the theme of social production in the information society.

With the establishment of the Learning and Education Laboratory for the Society 5.0 Era (Representative: Hiroshi Suzuki) at the SFC Research Institute in August 2019, in addition to the previous theme of "Fostering Social Producers who Graduate from Modernity and Create a New World," we will be conducting research on the new theme of "Co-education to Foster People who Create a New World" and In addition to the previous theme of "fostering social producers who will graduate from modernity and create a new world," we have added a new theme of "co-education to nurture people who will create a new world" to our research and project objectives.

In the spring of 2020, we began supporting high school students' inquiry-based learning in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Specifically, in cooperation with the city's Board of Education and school teachers, we are running inquiry learning courses for high school students in Hagi. In order to nurture the "creative power" of students, who are the leaders of the future, we are in the process of creating a model case for creating new learning. We are also planning to collaborate with the Niseko City Board of Education in Hokkaido.

    NeuroMusic

We research Neurosciences and Music (NeuroMusic) to understand why music is so fundamental to humans. We believe that music can be a prove to identify higher-order brain functions such as skilled motor control and learning, perception, cognition, memory, emotion and creativity in humans. We aim to clarify the origin of our musicality in the brain to augment the possibility of music for harmonious future.

Interests in the Neurosciences of Music has grown rapidly over the last few decades. However, there has been almost no laboratory for this field in Japan, despite a growing recognition of the need to understand the neural origin of our musicality. The NeuroMusicLab at Keio SFC (The Neurosciences and Music Laboratory at Keio University Shonan Fujisawa Campus) was founded by Dr. Shinya Fujii to address this need.

Music Therapy is the intentional and systematic use of music to restore physical and mental health, maintain and improve function, enhance quality of life, and change behavior, using the physiological, psychological, and social functions of music (see Japanese Music Therapy Association). In recent years, the need for music therapy has been increasing, and it is used in nursing homes and medical hospitals. However, scientific evidences are needed to clarify why and how music therapy works. In fact, Evidence-Based Music Therapy is needed (Bando, 2008; Sato, 2011). Under these circumstances, emerging research field of "Neurosciences and Music (NeuroMusic)" have a potential to elucidate how music is processed in the human brain and body (Fujii, 2018). The development of Neurosciences and Music is important in pioneering the field of Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) (Altenmüller & Schlaug, 2013). Recently, older adults with musical training were reported to perform better on cognitive tasks, such as working memory and executive function, than older adults without musical training (Grassi et al., 2017). Exercise with music was also reported to improve and maintain cognitive function in older adults (Satoh et al., 2014; 2017). Based on these previous studies, it is suggested that music is useful for improving and maintaining cognitive functions, but the underlying mechanisms have not yet been fully investigated. In this lecture, we will first learn about the basics, current status, and challenges of music therapy. Next, with the cooperation of Dr. Yuko Shindo from Shirankai Shirankai Hikarigaoka Hospital, we will learn how the effects of music therapy, music-supported therapy, and background music in day care are tested scientifically. Specifically, the participants in this class will learn what kind of cognitive and musical function assessments are used to verify the effects of music interventions on cognitive function, motivation, depression, etc., and the relationship between these effects and musical background. In addition, the participants in this class will visit Shirankai Hikarigaoka Hospital in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, to observe music therapy, music-assisted therapy, and the use of background music in a day care setting, as well as to practice cognitive and musical function assessments. Finally, the participants will also learn how to analyze data and perform statistical analysis of data obtained from cognitive and musical assessments.

    Studies in L2 pragmatic acquisition

This special research seminar examines how second languages (L2) are used in contexts, To be specific, we will survey how learners use L2 in speech acts, storytelling, discourse and conversation activities. In so doing, we will consider learners' first language, proficiency level and learning environment as possible factors influencing their performances.
The course will run mainly in Japanese, but we will read articles in English and Japanese, so students should have some knowledge of English to be able to read the assigned articles. The seminar will be open to both Japanese and foreign students, at graduate or undergraduate level, ideally those with some background in the conduct of research. It would also be beneficial for them to have some understanding of the theories of second language acquisition (SLA). We will have guest speakers' lectures during this summer seminar.
Prior to the start of the seminar, each participant should prepare themselves by reading all the assigned articles. We will assign readings to the participants of the seminar a week prior to the start of the seminar, and they are expected to read and critique those studies well enough to lead the discussion.
As a final project, students will design a study and undertake preliminary efforts to identify relevant background literature and pilot possible instruments that could be used in the collection of data. They will present the above on the last day of the seminar.

Summer Project for Studies of Essence on Practice: Understanding Phenomenology for Creating Pattern Languages

Edmund Husserl proposed the concept of “science of essence,” which is different from “science of matters of fact” like so-called empirical science. With using the concept, studies with creating a pattern language can be called as "Studies of Essence on Practice," because the essences discovered among gool practices are inquired. In this summer project, participants will read important books written by Husserl, understand the thought, and learn to describe it as methodology.

    Social Marketing and Value Co-Creation

Although marketing has developed its theories, ideas, and methods mainly in corporate management, its theories, ideas, and methods are now being used in the social sphere and in the sphere of activities of public and non-profit organizations. For example, non-profit organizations, governments, hospitals, schools, and others are utilizing marketing ideas, know-how, and techniques developed through corporate management in order to more effectively and efficiently realize their missions and values. In addition, for-profit companies are evaluating their corporate activities from the perspective of "corporate social responsibility" and "value co-creation with society," and are building the foundations for sustainable activities. This marketing movement is collectively called "social marketing," and various practices and theories are being accumulated. In this research project, students who have learned the basic concepts, ideas, methods, and transition of social marketing will work on specific product development while conducting various surveys, research, and development activities with the support of government agencies, companies, and social welfare corporations with which they have cooperative relationships.

    Molecular mechanisms controlling early development

In the Wet-Bio building located in the SFC, various experiments such as gene introduction, microscopic observation of organisms, and breeding of small aquatic organisms are possible. Participants will be those who are usually interested in the life phenomena of a particular organism. First, each person shares their research content as a whole, then discusses the questions and solutions, and then discusses what could be considered if a survey were conducted based on that premise. Each person will follow suit, make a detailed plan for conducting the experiment, and announce the progress.

Until now, the Suzuki Hiroshi Study Group has succeeded in fostering many venture entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs, and leaders in launching new businesses in large organizations under the theme of social production in the information society, but in 2019 In conjunction with the establishment of the Society 5.0 Era Learning and Education Laboratory (Representative Hiroshi Suzuki) at the SFC Research Institute in August, the conventional "cultivation of social producers who graduate from modern times and create a new world" In addition, I have been researching [co-education that nurtures people who will create a new world], and have added to the purpose of the study group to actually plan, plan, and realize a co-education project.

Then, in the fall of 2021 and the spring of 2022, students were sent to Sarabetsu Village / Hiroo Town, Hokkaido, and as part of regional revitalization, they have been built as a place for practicing social production in the field of primary industry. (And this year, Sarabetsu Village was adopted in the Digital Rural City National Concept established by the Cabinet Office.) Specifically, while coordinating with the village office and agricultural cooperatives, hearings on the health of people involved in the primary industry. We are conducting a survey and discussing measures to improve well-being with local businesses. Through these activities, he is in the process of creating a mutual assistance system that is indispensable in an aging society with a declining birthrate, while asking himself "what is happiness in modern graduation".

In the midst of such a period of change, we will redefine happiness in rural areas with Sarabetsu Village in Hokkaido as a special research project, and think about ways of mutual assistance centered on learning.
