Course Summary

Architecture itself works as a device to control the environment such as light, sound, heat and air-flow. Before modern times, buildings and cities fit to the climate and the environment had been build by the prodigious builders. After Industrial revolution, mechanical systems such as lighting, heating and cooling, ventilation, elevator etc. by using energy had expanded the human life area drastically, at the same time architecture had changed to take in those machines. The problem of finiteness of resources in the earth had required the architecture to have the view point of total sustainability such as energy-saving, reduction of CO2, environmental friendliness. After Great East Japan Earthquake 3.11, BCP(Business Continuity Plan) for energy supply stop and rethinking of energy resource such us abandoning nuclear power has been required when we design the architecture. We now try to realize "Smart City" in which we think architecture not only as a simple building but also as a network of buildings in the cities, also as a device to encourage human behavior change. In this class, learn about the background, theory, methods and examples of architecture as device to control the environment.
