Social Security System in Japan is quite good, if not perfect, as shown by indexes such as life expectancy and infant mortality rate. This lecture aims to get students to gain deep understandings on its characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, and lessons learnt from experiences of Japan, as well as its social backgrounds and circumstances, and also to provide useful and effective knowledge in order to establish/improve Social Security System in other countries. Each subsystem in Japan (Healthcare, Nursing Care, Pension, Labor Insurance, Public Assistance etc.) will be discussed. Each student will be required to write a short mid-term report on Social Security subsystem in other countries, which for example he/she is from or he/she is interested in. It will be publicized to the class so that students will also be able to gain knowledge of and make comparison on systems of various countries. Actually, Japanese System (especially healthcare system) is too unique to be directly applied to other countries, therefore those reports by students will help them to obtain more practical knowledge or skills of Social Security. This lecture will be provided in English under GIGA program.
