Course Summary

The economy and fabric of cities transform due to the various factors accompanied with transformation in their townscape and space. The course provides the methods of both real estate mechanism and urban design to foster better space and economy in cities, and explores what factors of real estate mechanism cause the transform in economy and space of cities by using the case study method with a series of precedents from Japan and overseas, and the course studies what visions and conditions should be examined over the period of real estate investment and development. We explore the interaction between real estate mechanism and urban design through the in-depth research on steak holders of real estate development projects in the case studies. In addition to the conventional real estate development and urban design attempts, the course challenges the possibility of real estate projects and urban design by considering game changing factors such as rapid urbanization and rising sharing economy. This course is held in the style of “mini-studio” and is intended for student to work within group and to deliver final presentation.
