"Theories from the South: Societies and Cultures of the Spanish-Speaking World"
This research seminar focuses on the learning process of the Spanish language, and the cultures and societies of the Spanish-Speaking World that language learning enables, seeking to understand the realities and the theories that emerge from concrete local contexts. Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as Southern Europe, has been sites of attempts to build a better society, and global social theory has been hugely influenced by the theories and thoughts that arose from these regions. The seminar is based on area studies and sociolinguistics, and is conducted through reading seminars and student research presentations. Students can choose and pursue their individual research topics, as well as participate in research initiatives in collaboration with the Department of Spanish and Spanish-Speaking Societies.
The seminar is held on Fridays 4th period, and students are encouraged to attend the reading seminar on academic Spanish Fridays 3rd period. At the end of the semester, we will have a half-day presentation session of students' research.
