Course Summary

In the 'Intercultural Communication -A critical perspective’ seminar, we explore the issues regarding culture, ethnicity/nationality/race, language, gender, class, and identity in intercultural communication. Culture is not a fixed entity but is created, negotiated, and contested by multiple parties and power interests. Our intercultural lives and encounters are deeply intertwined with various forms of power that often go unnoticed. Therefore, it is important that we understand the power at work in an intercultural context and develop critical literacy. Then, we can address imbalanced power relations and empower us to creatively seek alternative possibilities beyond the status quo.
We will explore the issues through reading and discussing books/videos/articles. Students will also conduct a project/ research on related topics by themselves or with other members of the seminar.
