Course Summary

(This course is conducted in both English and Japanese. Participating students will use both languages in their class participation and student presentation.)
In this course taught every other year, we will focus on frequently-used methodology(methodologies) of qualitative research to inquire into the themes of language and culture. This year, we will focus on critical discourse analysis, explore its intellectual foundations, and through discuss the possibilities of this methodology applying it to concrete texts. The course will consist of reading seminars where participating students present a summary of the readings with possible discussion topics, followed by discussion in class. Towards the second half of the term, students will also be required to experiment with a short research and present their research result, which will form the basis of their final essay.
