Neuroscience, Dermatology, Sensing Engineering, 3D Printing Technologies, Personal Fabrication, Sensory Evaluation

This special workshop aims at obtaining knowledge of neuroscience, dermatological, and haptic science. Specifically, we plan to conduct research on how a sense of touch is related to deep SHITSUKAN, which can be acquired on the skin surface.

This special research project is a part of a collaborative study with the SFC TOUCH LAB (Nakatani lab) and the biophysics lab (at Chiba University).

After taking this class, we wish students to learn research methodologies in haptic sciences with dermatological sciences for finishing students' graduation research projects (for both grad and undergrad students).

Multi-omics analysis of microorganisms on the human body

It is known that there are about 40 trillion microorganisms of about 1,000 species living symbiotically in the human body. These flora vary greatly depending on the individual and the environment, and are known to have various effects on the human body through crosstalk with the host. In this project, we focus on intestinal bacteria and skin indigenous bacteria among the indigenous bacteria in the human body, and analyze the bacterial flora by meta-16S rRNA gene sequencing and metabolome analysis using CE-TOFMS to clarify the interrelationship among bacterial flora, metabolites, and host. In this summer project, we will conduct bacterial flora analysis and metabolome analysis, and discuss among the members to develop our individual research. During staying at TTCK, members can develop the individual research respectively outside of class hours, too.

    Designing a symbiotic x slow-living town

Social firms have proven to be beneficial for people with disabilities in terms of employment opportunities and healthy lifestyles. However, these new initiatives face many challenges in terms of involving local stakeholders, job matching, commercialization, and expansion of sales channels. While social farms are secluded and rich in nature, they are also required to revitalize the community as a place for people of diverse backgrounds, health tourism, and slow-living community development, rather than a closed life within the community. Therefore, this project aims to create a better town where the diversity of people can coexist by conducting on-site surveys and working with social farm operators to solve the issues.

Research on landscape as a regional resource

We will research rural landscape as a regional asset by surveying the landscape of rural villages, interviewing local residents, and talking to the local government in Kamiyama-cho, Nasai-gun, Tokushima Prefecture.
As the concept of "cultural landscape" suggests, a landscape is an expression of the overall system that includes the natural environment of the area and the livelihood of its inhabitants, and its preservation requires "dynamic conservation" to maintain and pass on the system that makes the landscape possible. However, the system itself has not been visualized in an easy-to-understand form, nor have methods and value criteria been established to determine what is to be preserved in the local landscape. Careful investigation, analysis, examination, and discussion are necessary to understand the local landscape.
Kamiyama is known for the beauty of its mountainous rural landscape of terraced rice paddies, terraced fields, and farmland along the Ayukuro River, but with plans to attract satellite offices of IT companies and a private technical college, rapid changes in the local landscape are expected. Currently, the town is considering formulating its first landscape plan.
In this project, with the cooperation of the Kamiyama Tsunagu Public Corporation, we will stay in Kamiyama to conduct a landscape survey of the area and prepare basic data for the study of the landscape plan. Through the survey, the participants will also learn fieldwork methods.

RNA is known to be a molecule that intricately and precisely regulates higher-order biological phenomena. The purpose of the 2022 Summer Research Program is to further our understanding of life phenomena by investigating how RNA and related biomolecules are related to our own research topics through both biological and computational experiments. Specifically, they will create hydrogels using RNA, investigate the function of gene clusters in Halomonas sp. and analyze genes related to telomere, the terminal sequence of shark chromosomes. Some of the participants are unable to come to the Center due to the spread of the new coronavirus during the summer program period, so they will be able to participate remotely.

Crisis Management, Risk Communication, Natural Disaster, Disaster Prevention

This study will examine the crisis management of organizations in light of the increasing severity and frequency of natural disasters, and will focus on public facilities in a practical manner. For example, taking an airport used by an unspecified number of people as an example, it is the employees of an airline company who are in charge of crisis management at the time of a disaster. Since they are well versed in crisis management, including response to aircraft accidents, and are professionals in customer service, it can be predicted that many users will depend on the airline company. In reality, however, they do not necessarily have expertise in natural disasters, and above all, airline personnel are also victims of disasters.

Under these circumstances, possible risks (risks of natural disasters themselves, risks due to the presence of an unspecified number of people, risks due to differences from aircraft accidents, risks of psychological burden on employees, etc.) are identified, and possible solutions are obtained while incorporating the opinions of relevant experts. This is not the only "correct answer," but rather a "solution" that is possible only on a case-by-case basis. In this case, it is necessary to develop human resources who are capable of not only making decisions based on manuals, but also responding flexibly and flexibly.

In this class, students will learn from lectures by experts in multiple fields (aviation safety, natural disasters, and mental health care) and consider measures to solve problems. The final product will be a teaching material on disaster prevention in public facilities.

    Introduction to Korean Studies 4

This special research project is an introductory subject to Korean Studies. Needless to say, it is essential to understand Korean from the perspective of regional research to study South Korea and its extended areas. On the other hand, learning Korean may further develop into the study of the language itself, that is, the study of Korean. In this project, for those who have taken Korean language, we will specifically learn the pattern of developing Korean language into (1) area studies and (2) the pattern of developing it as research on the language itself.
Although the full-time faculty members of the Korean language laboratory have different research fields, we will explain how they face Korean and conduct daily research as a research tool and as a research target, with episodes. A mini-lecture by graduate students (master's and doctoral) is also planned.
Lectures by guests invited from outside include (1) graduates who learned Korean at SFC as beginners and are still active in society using Korean, and (2) former full-time teachers who were in charge of Korean language education at SFC. (3) Researchers who practice language and regional studies have been on the stage so far. In this project, we will watch some interesting Korean movies and deepen our understanding of Korea in recent years through movies.
Students will carry out group work when their intellectual curiosity about Korean society has increased. Students who have similar interests will form a group, conduct research activities, and then give a group presentation. After having a discussion with all participants, prepare and submit a personal research report.
Through a series of work, it is our hope that students will be able to rediscover the significance and goals of learning Korean and discover each "way" that will lead to further research activities.
