Function and structural analysis of polyketide synthases

Modular polyketide synthase (PKSs) synthesize the core structures of diverse natural products, including antibiotics and immunosuppressants. However, since modular PKSs are huge enzyme, their entire protein structures have not yet determined. Here, by first predicting the structure of the protein using AlphaFold2, we will confirm how the structural difference occurs in all PKSs whose three-dimensional structure has been determined. In addition, we will analyze the expression and function of proteins that visualize the structure.

Finance and Open Innovation in DX era

In Japan, as various social issues in the region become apparent, investment in start-up companies, which are important elements for solving social issues and creating new industries, is becoming active. In order to further develop start-up companies, it is necessary not only to supply funds but also to form a new ecosystem in collaboration with entrepreneurs, universities, local governments, etc. This special research project aims to develop future entrepreneurial human resources. Specifically, we will share the pains and successful experiences of financing and networking at startups through the actual experience of entrepreneurs, and introduce examples of open innovation in industry-government-academia collaboration. In addition, group work and final presentations will be held to propose business development from the perspective of an entrepreneur to solve regional issues by sharing actual issues from local governments. This special research project will be funded by Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank.

This special research project is an introductory subject to Korean Studies. Needless to say, it is essential to understand Korean from the perspective of regional research to study South Korea and its extended areas. On the other hand, learning Korean may further develop into the study of the language itself, that is, the study of Korean. In this project, for those who have taken Korean language, we will specifically learn the pattern of developing Korean language into (1) area studies and (2) the pattern of developing it as research on the language itself.
Although the full-time faculty members of the Korean language laboratory have different research fields, we will explain how they face Korean and conduct daily research as a research tool and as a research target, with episodes. A mini-lecture by graduate students (master's and doctoral) is also planned.
Lectures by guests invited from outside include (1) graduates who learned Korean at SFC as beginners and are still active in society using Korean, and (2) former full-time teachers who were in charge of Korean language education at SFC. (3) Researchers who practice language and regional studies have been on the stage so far. In this project, we will watch some interesting Korean movies and deepen our understanding of Korea in recent years through movies.
Students will carry out group work when their intellectual curiosity about Korean society has increased. Students who have similar interests will form a group, conduct research activities, and then give a group presentation. After having a discussion with all participants, prepare and submit a personal research report.
Through a series of work, it is our hope that students will be able to rediscover the significance and goals of learning Korean and discover each "way" that will lead to further research activities.

This is a course to introduce Keio Gijuku and provide new students who just “joined” Keio Gijuku with an opportunity to think about the significance of their learning and lives at Keio Gijuku. Knowing ideology and history of Keio Gijuku will be the starting point for both freshman and transfer students in their learning and lives at this university. Particularly in the nursing department where students learn practical and pragmatic matters, they may neglect deep insights regarding people behind and human societies if they focus only on matters which could be immediately useful. Recently, the term “pragmatism” has been frequently used. However, the substantial meaning of this term is much deeper and broader. The key to understand this exists in the tradition and history of Keio Gijuku, which pass down the ideas of Fukuzawa Yukichi who professed pragmatism. We would like our students to pursue “pragmatism ”, which should not be neglected under the simple “how-to” learning.
In this course, students will attend a series of lectures offered by off-campus researchers and business executives from various fields, who have been studying Fukuzawa and the History of Keio Gijuku in association with their own fields.
(This course is taken by many students from each one of the 3 departments of SFC every year. We will occasionally introduce various feedbacks for each lecture submitted by students from different departments, fields and years, hoping that they will find how meaningful and interesting it is to learn on this campus consisting of 3 departments of 2 graduate courses.)
