The internal world of the mind is manifested through diverse forms of expression. Of these, I will explore, in particular, the experiential world surrounding “images” from a psychoanalytic perspective. How a person can understand “images” richly and deeply depends on the spread and depth of the area of experiences possessed by the reader of such images. Therefore, to understand the entity that reads the images itself, I will place emphasis on the process of discussing a wide range of image experiences.

This class is for design students. You will learn graphic design and product design from design examples from the 1960s taken up in class. And learn the geometry that led to the advantages of those designs.

This class presents Buckminster Fuller's view of the world through these. Fuller is best known as the inventor of such words as "Spaceship Earth" and "synergy." This class provides an opportunity to learn practically the inventions related to "earth system design" that he practiced. This class provides an opportunity to learn the technical background of inventions. For that reason, this is a class that integrates fine art and mathematics. This class as well introduces his pioneering ideas about the global environment. But books tells you about Fuller's ideological background. In this class, you will learn about his inventions that cannot be understood from books while assembling paper craft models. In this way, you can learn his engineering of world maps and ultralight structures devised to operate "Spaceship Earth". At the same time, I will introduce related technologies that I have been involved in. It's an improvement over Fuller's technique. In this way, you will acquire a design source that will solve the global problems that you are currently facing.

This class focuses on sense of touch. Even though we touch something in daily basis, it is rare for us to pay attentions to somatosensory feedback itself. Recent scientific reserach in embodied cognition suggests that our decision makings are substantially influenced by haptic feedback experienced in our daily life. I expect that looking through the daily life in terms of "touch". It would provide an opportunity to find hidden values that are not consciously realized.

We, designer use drawings to describe our design. Fabricators refer to the drawing for fabricating buildings and/or furnitures. In that sense, these drawings are important in communicating with your collaborators.

General drawings, in this case typically architectural plan and section drawings describe a sectional image of your design subject. In architectural field, almost all buildings are framed by vertical column and horizontal beam and slab therefore there is no strong argument in such drawing format.

On the other hand, there are new buildings which has a complicated configuration, such as three dimentional curved surface. I believe al of you can remember the previous winning work for Main stadium for Tokyo Olympic game design by Zaha Hadid. You can imagine that ordinary architectural drawings can hardly describe such building's design essence. You are unable to measure total square meter of its exterior building.

Thus the ordinary drawing format is limited in solid geometry for describing its essence. And I believe the challenge limits designer's creativity.

This class gives you an opportunity for you to,

    1. understand the mechanism and challenges existing drawing method has.

    2. utilize these drawing method for three dimensional design.

    3. develop the ability for three dimensional way of design thinking.
With these points, this class gives you an opportunity for you to acquire a skill to describe a unique design.

This lecture offers students to learn the principles and applications of global and local environmental issues in systems perspective. We will start from the global movements on the global warming and then learn the basic elements of environment including air, soil, water and plants. Then we will learn the stocks and flows of the elements in the perspective ecosystems and services. With this fundamental knowledge, students will be able to understand the background of global environmental policies and think to act proactively in research and daily life.

Natural environment as a composition of ecosystems provides a variety of ecosystem services to human beings. however, Its capacity to accommodate human need is limited. When the pressure exceed the capacity, ecosystems may change irreversibly and enter to a unstable and unsustainable state. This sounds self-evident to every one but on paper only, no real experience. This course interpret high resolution images and calculate the land price, agricultural products, and CO2 absorptions through simple exercise. Through the processes we will learn the procedure of ecosystem assessment, the knowledge to understand the status and functions, and services of environment. By putting the results on the frame of stock and flow we will rethink the role of land capital, industrial capital and natural capital in modern society, and clarify the precondition of sustainability.

The primary theme of "Reflective Design" is to design communication. We approach this theme by attempting to understand the relationship between the images (including preconceptions and prejudices) we have about various events in our daily lives and human behavior and communication. Understanding the nature of communication is essential to design, although it may not always be directly related to products and services. By simplifying our communication behavior and considering loose rules, we aim to think about communication design (or the place of communication).

How is the knowledge represented and stored? How do we perceive the world? How do we reason, make decisions, and learn? What are the origins of human cognition and how does the cognition develop? In this course, we will analyze the mechanisms of human cognitive functions from a psychological perspective and consider what human "knowledge" is. We will also discuss the mechanisms of human brain activity behind the cognitive processing. Specifically, this course mainly covers the following topics. (1) Mechanism of memory (2) Perception and attention (3) Conceptual representations and categories (4) Reasoning and decision-making (5) Language and cognition (6) Cognition and language development

Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary study in which philosophy, linguistics, psychology, brain science, artificial intelligence, computer science, and other sciences explore human "knowledge" across traditional academic boundaries. In this class, students experiences basic methods of experiments in cognitive psychology. Students first participates several experiments and learn how to analyze the data. Through a group work, students then design an experiment, collect data, analyze them, and give a presentation.
Elementary statistical knowledge is required for this class. We assume to use Microsoft Excel. Although not required, it is useful to be able to use the total statistics software R and the programming languages Python and JavaScript.
