    Meteorology

Disasters occur every year in Japan due to heavy rain caused by meiyu fronts, typhoons, and linear precipitation bands. In fact, data shows that the frequency of heavy rain has increased in the past few decades, and this is predicted to continue to increase in the future, due to global warming. Along with rain, wind, especially sudden strong winds (gusts), causes great damage. In addition to damaging moving cars and buildings, gusts can also overturn ship cargo and damage wind power generators, causing significant damage. Generally, there is a proportional relationship between wind strength and rainfall, and when strong winds blow, it often rains heavily. As the frequency of heavy rains is increasing due to global warming, there is a possibility that the frequency of gusts of wind is also increasing, which this project will examine. Topography plays a large role in determining the wind. Therefore, in order to analyze wind gusts, a location that is affected by both complex topography and the sea is desirable. Therefore, in this project, we will carry out observations on Awaji Island and collect data from the past several decades, as it has the characteristics of both the topography and islands of the Seto Inland Sea and has a wealth of observation data that is constantly being measured by radar.

This course, entitled "Exploration of Sports Equipment Development," is a hands-on study of how product development is carried out at the factories of companies that actually develop sports equipment, including not only visits to manufacturing sites but also dialogues and discussions with professional engineers. High performance is required for sports equipment used by top athletes, but safety performance is also essential in sports played by ordinary people. In this class, students learn not only about the scientific evidence that has been accumulated to realize such high performance, but also about how the highly skilled professionals who support this evidence have created product development.
This year, we will focus on Toyama Prefecture, which produces many wood products such as bats, rackets, and ski boards, and textile products such as sportswear, to explore the actual situation of sports equipment development supported by local industries.

    Modern and Contemporary Chinese History

The structure of rural society in China varies among North, Central, and South China. However, it has not yet been fully examined as to what differences exist at the village level and how to analyze regional disparities. This seminar will extract village data from the local historical literature and analyze the differences between villages with a focus on the following five points: (1) the number of households and population, (2) relationship between families and villages, (3) land ownership, (4) distance between villages, and (5) economic condition and geographical environment.

Students are required to read basic reference s on the politics and economics of rural society during the period from the 1930s to the 1950s , and attend the discussions on Chinese social transformation.

    Assessment development

In this project, we will conduct research on the development of assessments to identify the causes of children’s poor school performance. Conventional achievement tests have tended to be used to uniformly measure each child and rank them within a class, or to score and grasp their level of understanding of each unit. In reality, however, there is great diversity in children's learning. This project explores the development of assessments that will allow teachers to visualize children's difficulties in learning from multiple perspectives. The majority of activities will be conducted in person, but online classes will be used as needed and appropriate. The ultimate goal will be for groups to develop assessments for upper elementary and middle school students. The final session will be presented in the classroom.
