    Molecular mechanisms controlling early development

In the Wet-Bio building located in the SFC, various experiments such as gene introduction, microscopic observation of organisms, and breeding of small aquatic organisms are possible. Participants will be those who are usually interested in the life phenomena of a particular organism. First, each person shares their research content as a whole, then discusses the questions and solutions, and then discusses what could be considered if a survey were conducted based on that premise. Each person will follow suit, make a detailed plan for conducting the experiment, and announce the progress.

    Studies in L2 pragmatic acquisition

This special research seminar examines how second language (L2)s are used in context. To be specific, we will survey how learners use L2 in speech acts, storytelling, discourse and conversation activities. In so doing, we will consider learners' first languages, proficiency level and learning environment as possible factors influencing their performances.
The lecture and discussion will be conducted mainly in Japanese, but a majority of the articles assigned for the course will be in English. The seminar will be open to both Japanese and foreign students at graduate or undergraduate level. It would be beneficial to have a basic understanding of the theories of second language acquisition (SLA). We will have guest speakers' lectures during this summer seminar.
Prior to the start of the seminar, each participant should prepare themselves by reading all the assigned articles. We will assign readings to seminar participants one week prior to the start of the seminar. Participants are expected to familiarise themselves with those articles so they can actively contribute to discussions in the seminar.
As a final project, students will design a pilot study, identifying relevant background literature and appropriate methods for the collection of data. They will present the above on the last day of the seminar.

    Study on Functional RNAs

Since the end of the last century, the complete genomic sequences of many organisms have been determined. The impact of these genome projects on the various fields of science has been enormous. It could be said that we now have in our hands “the blueprints of life” for these organisms. At the beginning of the 21st century, it became apparent that large numbers of noncoding RNAs are, unexpectedly, encoded in these genomes. These RNAs are not translated into proteins but act as riboregulators, and have had another huge impact on the life sciences. More recently still, a new tide of research into the classical noncoding RNAs, such as the transfer RNAs (tRNAs), has arrived. In this project, we are especially focusing on the following subjects: (1) Construction of an expression system on microbial membranes for peptides that capture microplastics. (2) Research on the origin of the Ebola virus. (3) Analysis of CSD protein(s) possibly involved in transcription elongation and termination. (4) Identification of microorganisms in specific rocks..

    Systems Biology

"Life" was once thought to be so complex that it would be impossible to understand its entirety. However, with the advent of the 21st century, it has become possible to analyze large amounts of biological information, including genomes, and with the use of information technology, it is no longer a dream to understand the full extent of "life". SFC has been a pioneer in this field for more than two decades.

The applied fields of systems biology are unlimited, ranging from medical science, environmental science and ecology, food science, to the elucidation of the origin and evolution of life. In this special research project, we will conduct intensive research on a specific theme within the scope of advanced biosciences.

In the field of humanities, "dialogue" is an essential concept that dates back to ancient Greek philosophy. In modern times, "dialogue" is also regarded as a concept that allows us to critically reflect on "subjectivity." Moreover, in learning activities, "dialogue" is highly valued as a means to stimulate learners' reflection. In this seminar, we aim to theoretically examine "dialogue" across multiple domains of philosophy, language, and education, in order to deepen our understanding of the relationships between individuals and also between individuals and society in our contemporary world.

A recent advance in noninvasive brain measurement techniques has enabled us to see human brain functions. In kenkyukai, we have learned these techniques as well as analysis methods, but less attempts have been made to survey background studies and summarize the knowledge. Therefore, we will prepare for the project by surveying neural information studies and by submitting the survey content as a preliminary assignment (please submit it by the end of January 2024). In this project, we will first survey neural information studies for summarization. Then, we will summarize the survey content and present it each other. Finally, we will share and structuralize the summarized content, and upload it on the web as a final assignment (please submit it by the end of February 2024).

A large number of injuries are expected to occur in the event of a disaster. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government estimates that approximately 85,000 people would be killed or injured in the event of an earthquake directly under the Tokyo metropolitan area during winter days. Even in normal times, more than 120,000 patients with cardiopulmonary arrest are transported to emergency rooms annually in Japan, and more than 300,000 injuries and illnesses occur annually as a result of traffic accidents. Anyone can be at the scene of an injury or illness, and the first responders are non-medically qualified rescuers (first responders).
First responders are required to be able to recognize and detect the occurrence of an injured or sick person at an early stage, call for rescue, provide appropriate observation and first aid treatment, transport the person to a safe location, and communicate information.
In this project, participants will learn what to do when rescuers without medical qualifications encounter injured and sick people, as well as how to prioritize injured and sick people (triage) and management of a large number of injured and sick people as practiced in disaster medicine. Then, participants will deepen their understanding of the situation in the event of an earthquake by working in groups to create a scenario for a live drill to learn about the types of injuries and sick and injured people that may occur. Then, by responding to the actual situation, the participants will think about how they should be as first responders.

Modeling and simulation of biological systems

One of the most important characteristics of life is that it is active and continues to be active. By acting, living systems interact with the environment and maintain their own existence in the environment. In this project, we will use computer simulations to explore the dynamic behavior of living systems and to understand their operating principles.
